Why Solid, Ethical SEO Practices Should Be Important to You

Recently a couple of big names made the news (here and here) when they were exposed violating Google’s Webmaster Guidelines. The disingenuous methods formerly used to boost their rankings in search are considered “Black Hat” SEO tactics, which implies the dubious techniques used by certain practitioners. The offending sites are now suffering ranking penalties in Google search and perhaps much more importantly, their name and online reputation has been disgraced.
Now Google is retooling its search results to reduce rankings for poor quality sites. This includes sites that copy content from other sites (also known as “scraper” sites), duplicate content sites and others that provide a poor user experience. Frankly, we feel this is wonderful news for honest site owners and businesses that do not participate in risky schemes to boost search rankings. Search rankings for quality sites that have solid, original content will continue to improve as low-quality spammer sites lose rankings and drop off the competitive radar.

Here at Web Ad.vantage we are acutely aware of and carefully follow Google guidelines and best practices. Our Search Engine Optimization (SEO) recommendations are crafted to work within the rules. We always recommend our clients use unique content of the highest quality on their sites, and work hard to ensure our clients do not fall prey to link farm schemes and other risky practices which they may regret down the road.

Solid, honest SEO practices are not evil, dirty or something to be feared. In fact, when legitimate techniques are properly applied to your site, both your site visitors and rankings in search results pages will benefit from improved information quality and presentation. Your site becomes more discoverable, valuable and easier for visitors to use, which can translate into increased sales and conversions. In short, when you invest in professional SEO services from a reputable company, you are making a sound investment in your online presence, reputation and your bottom line.

Integrating social media with SEO

Social media is a big part of search engine optimization. It gives retailers another channel, where they can interact with their customers at a more casual level. This makes social media a vital part of trust building.

Experts forecast that the use of social media in SEO campaigns will continue to expand as the industry gets older. It is an integral part of SEO campaigns.

Social media draws its significance from traffic. These sites are often the most used sites of consumers. They interact with their friends and meet new acquaintances through many social networking sites online—the most notable of which is probably Facebook.

Plus, they have become relevant to search. Currently, Google and Bing are referencing Facebook and Twitter to filter relevant content.

Search Engine Optimization Horrors: Be Careful Who You Hire For SEO

A recent article in The New York Times, The Dirty Little Secrets of Search, by David Segal exposes the backhanded tactics some SEO firms utilize to improve their clients' search engine rankings.
Segal investigated the unusually high rankings by J.C. Penney the last several months for a broad range of keywords. Through the help of a search expert, The Times uncovered the use of paid links scattered across the web, on mostly obscure, unrelated websites. These paid links pointed to the jcpenney.com site. This technique is considered a no-no in Google's SEO rulebook, and is part of practice known as "black-hat" optimization.
Segal explains black-hat services "are not illegal, but trafficking in them risks the wrath of Google. The company draws a pretty thick line between techniques it considers deceptive and "white hat" approaches, which are offered by hundreds of consulting firms and are legitimate ways to increase a site's visibility."
Turns out J.C. Penney issued a statement saying it was not involved with or aware of the paid links, but shortly thereafter fired its search engine consulting firm.
Upon notification, and after investigating the findings, Google has adjusted J.C. Penney's ranking for a variety of keywords. In one case, in a span of two hours J.C. Penney dropped from the number one search result for "Samsonite carry on luggage" to a dismal number 71.
J.C. Penney's story is fair warning for small businesses to ensure their hired SEO help only employs white hat optimization techniques.

Google schools Overstock.com

Google slaps down Overstock’s attempts to boost rankings by offering discounts for inbound links from universities. The incident is the latest attempt by the search engine giant to fight off attempts to game its system, and could signal a harsher stance against large retailers.

Here is today’s search engine optimization tip for online retailers: Don’t pay college students—or, really, anyone else—to do the grunt work of building links back to e-commerce sites. That’s what Overstock.com Inc.did, and now Google is penalizing the web merchant with lower natural search rankings.Overstock, No. 28 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, had encouraged web sites affiliated with colleges and universities—that is, sites with .edu addresses—to embed links that would lead back to the Overstock e-commerce site. For instance, a blog from a graduate student at the University of Texas at Dallas offered advice to new students and mentioned such items as gift baskets, computer desks and laptop computers. Those terms were highlighted, and embedded with links that led back to the Overstock site. Web publishers, such as bloggers, who embedded those links in content on their sites could receive discounts from the retailer.
Overstock says it has discontinued the link-building program.
“We enabled university webmasters to provide discount links to faculty and students. Google has now made clear it believes these links should not factor into their search algorithm,” says an Overstock spokesman. “We understand Google's position and have made the appropriate changes to remain within Google's guidelines. In fact, we had already discontinued this program two weeks ago when we notified university webmasters.” He adds that some university administrators have been slow in pulling down the links.
Overstock provided no further details. Google did not comment beyond a general statement that it sees frequent attempts to game natural search rankings.
Links leading to a site generally can boost that site’s ranking in search results for Google and Bing, with the idea being that inbound links provide evidence of a site’s worth and value. Search experts say that .edu addresses can carry special weight for retailers because Google treats .edu addresses as more authoritative than some other types of web addresses, especially when leading to an e-commerce site.
“Virtually every retailer pursuing an SEO strategy would welcome .edu links because of their reputation for boosting rankings,” says Rich Stokes, founder and CEO of AdGooroo, which tracks online advertising. “Not all retailers succeed at this, however, because academics in general do not like to post links to commercial sites.”
How Google caught Overstock was unclear, though press reports say an Overstock competitor tipped off Google. Byrne Hobart, marketing strategy director for Blue Fountain Media, an online marketing firm, says Overstock did a poor job of concealing the link-building effort. “Anyone looking at those links would be able to see that they were artificial,” he says. “And since these were links from high-value sites, they're quite visible.”
The main problem, search experts say, was the use of product discounts to encourage links from university-affiliated sites. “Specifically targeting .edu links in exchange for discounts is a form of payment and Google is against paying for links,” says Mark Hawks, founder of SEOSavvy, a web marketing firm. He says Google usually penalizes sites automatically, such as via an algorithm update that attempts to fix a specific loophole, rather than by hand, either through outright banning a site or manually lowering its rankings. Overstock did not detail how much its rankings dropped in the wake of the incident.
The Overstock incident is the latest one to highlight how Google is trying to fight back against what it considers out-of-bounds attempts to game its search rankings.
Just before Christmas, for instance, the search engine giant said it would take steps to lower rankings of sites that try to use consumer complaints to boost search rankings. The move came after the owner of eyewear retail site DecorMyEyes.com bragged that he increased its rankings because of the volume of consumer complaints about it that were posted online, some of which contained authoritative links back to the site.
And earlier this month, multichannel retailer J.C. Penney Co. Inc., No. 16 in the Internet Retailer Top 500 Guide, said it would cut ties with its SEO marketing vendor after an article in the New York Times accused the retailer of using paid inbound links to boost rankings for a variety of products sold by the merchant. The retailer says it is working to make sure the links are taken down.
Such incidents underscore the importance of search rankings, search experts say. “In recent years, retailers have become more aggressive and thus less compliant in their link-building tactics,” says Eric Papczun, vice president of SEO and feeds for Performics, another online marketing agency. “We believe this is due to the increased competitive pressures to grow this channel due to its high return on investment and opportunity to add customers.”
But the recent issues involving Overstock and Penney also signal another shift in how Google handles search rankings, he adds.
“Some retailers have a false sense of security as they have believed that Google will not target corrective action on their large brands due to their size and importance of appearing in search results—almost a ‘too big to fail’ concept,” he says. “If this was true, it is no longer the case.”\

If you steal my articles and I find out, I will destroy you. That is all.

SEO (Search Engine Optimization) is an industry rife with individuals who just loooooove to thieve content, what with content supposedly being king and all. The more on-page copy a person can populate a site with, the better in terms of rank-ability. Yes, it takes more than just populating a site with copy for it to rank well, but it certainly does help tremendously in most circumstances.

Because of that — and because people know that Google is ever-increasingly getting better with identifying (thus, ranking lowly) duplicate content — there’s a popular practice for generating would-be unique content from a preexisting article, called “article spinning.” By definition:

Article Spinning: Taking a written body of work and manually or automatically modifying it using synonymously equivalent words and/or restructuring its contents; then, posting the modified body of work on the Internet as though it is unique and original content.

Stepping back for a minute, as a writer, it doesn’t get much worse than someone stealing your content and pawning it off as their own. Whether it’s someone copying your content verbatim and posting it with their name, rewriting your content instead of writing a custom piece based on it, scraping your content and not linking to your original article, or otherwise, there just aren’t enough anger management techniques out there to prevent a writer from wanting to absolutely destroy someone who thieves their content!

Back to spinning articles, the important thing to note is that it’s a practice rarely utilized for anything other than generating topical/relevant content to help a page rank. In other words, these articles aren’t generated for the sake of human consumption; they’re generated for the sake of appealing to search engine crawlers. And with the advent of programs that tirelessly do all the laborious work for you — everything from scraping content (that is, gathering relevant content on its own per your specifications) to processing, modifying, and saving the end results — spinning articles has become an incredibly fast and simple task. If you want to see one of the most popular sites that’s chock-full of spun content, check out EzineArticles; a site used primarily for article marketing.

Now, if you’re wondering what the title of this post has to do with what I’ve written so far, the time has arrived to delve into that. Keeping a long story not quite as long, I like to perform searches related to my blog to see where I rank, who’s saying what, etc. Recently, I performed a search in Google for zdnet seo. Though it’s currently located at the top of the second page of results at the time of this writing, this soon-to-be-destroyed Web site showed up as the 8th result on the first page of results. I clicked on it and, well… I had a conniption.

Only kidding.

I didn’t have a conniption, but I was certainly astonished to see a veritable cornucopia of spun versions of many of my articles which read quite humorously due to the synonyms the software they used replaced many of my words with. For instance:

My Original: Questions/comments/concerns? Speak your mind in the comments section below! (Link to article)

Spun Version: Questions/comments/concerns? Talk the mind in the notes section under! (Link to article)

You can click on each of the links to compare the articles in-full, but as you can see, synonyms don’t always keep a contextually-relevant flow; so it’s quite common to end up with oddly-worded gobbledygook when using programs to spin articles. And although Google may see the spun article as unique content, it’s still close enough to the original for me to report the site to our intellectual property peeps here at ZDNet which should, in turn, be enough to circumnavigate matters of ranking by hopefully getting the faux articles removed. Less spam is a good thing.

Anyway, the main point of this post is to give those of you unaware, a glimpse into the process of spinning articles. Sometimes, it can get quite complex — such as when people pay others to take an article and re-write its contents from start to finish. The end result is a completely unique article that says the same thing in a completely different way. As such, those types of articles are very difficult to spot and are virtually impossible to claim infringement with.

In the case of my articles with this other site, perhaps I was supposed to just be happy that they included a mangled version of my blog post signature?

Regardless, the next time you think of stealing someone’s content, just make sure it’s not my content. If it is, then just be aware that my content is actually ZDNet’s content and ZDNet has an intellectual property division consisting of lawyers and all kinds of other fancy pants who know the ins-and-outs of acts like OCILLA and can take legal action accordingly. As for me, personally? Well, let’s just say I know all kinds of individuals who like to DESTROY the evil-doers of the Internet! Watch out, or else you just might have to deal with THIS guy!

Note: Of course I’m not literally going to destroy anyone, but I really will send our intellectual property unit a note of anyone I find stealing content. THAT is all.

Google Penalizes Overstock for Search Tactics

By AMIR EFRATI
Google Inc. is penalizing Overstock.com Inc. in its search results after the retailer ran afoul of Google policies that prohibit companies from artificially boosting their ranking in the Internet giant's search engine.
Overstock's pages had recently ranked near the top of results for dozens of common searches, including "vacuum cleaners" and "laptop computers." But links to Overstock on Tuesday dropped to the fifth or sixth pages of Google results for many of those categories, greatly reducing the chances that a user would click on its links.
The incident, according to Overstock, stemmed in part from its practice of encouraging websites of colleges and universities to post links to Overstock pages so that students and faculty could receive discounts on the shopping site. Overstock said it discontinued the pro.

Internet search experts say that sites associated with educational institutions, which come with ".edu" in their Web addresses, are often considered by Google's search algorithm to be more authoritative than commercial sites. Experts say educational sites rarely link to commercial sites, so a shopping site can surge in Google rankings if an .edu page links to it.
"Google has made clear they believe these links should not factor into their search algorithm," said Patrick Byrne, Overstock's chief executive, in a statement. "We understand Google's position and have made the appropriate changes to remain within Google's guidelines."
Google wouldn't discuss details of the incident, citing a policy against discussing specific websites. A Google spokesman said its goal "is to deliver the most relevant information possible." He added that "attempts to game Google's ranking go on 24 hours a day, every single day."
Many companies use a variety of techniques to try to enhance their positions in search results, a practice called search engine optimization, or SEO. Appearing higher on pages containing search results tends to attract greater attention among the many customers who hunt for goods or services through Google and other search engines. Some companies hire SEO services to help elevate their rankings.
The Overstock incident is the second move by Google in two weeks against a large retailer for allegedly violating guidelines. Earlier this month, the New York Times reported that Google lowered the ranking of links to J.C. Penney Co. in response to tactics employed by an SEO consultant on its behalf.
The retailer has said that it wasn't aware of the tactics and didn't authorize them. A spokeswoman said J.C. Penney terminated its relationship with the SEO consultant. She said the retailer was disappointed Google has reduced its rankings and will work to regain its standings.
In Overstock's case, the retailer offered discounts of 10% on some merchandise to students and faculty. In exchange, it asked college and university websites to embed links for certain keywords like "bunk beds" or "gift baskets" to Overstock product pages.
Until recently, links to Overstock pages were among the top three results for such words on Google search results. By Tuesday afternoon, links to Overstock for those same searches dropped to between No. 40 and No. 70 in the rankings.
The change followed a complaint by a competitor last week to Google about Overstock's actions.
Overstock, which is based in Salt Lake City, was founded in 1999 and is known for discount merchandise. It had 10 million unique visitors last month, according to comScore.
Websites tend to rank well on Google results pages if lots of other sites post links to them. That's a key principle behind PageRank, the original algorithm developed by Google co-founder Larry Page to help assign a ranking to websites. If many sites provide links to a particular Web page, the PageRank logic goes, that page must be important or useful.
Google's guidelines ask websites not to participate in "schemes" that are "intended to manipulate PageRank," and it forbids sites from paying other sites to embed certain links on their pages. Many schemes intended to trick Google's search algorithm have included .edu links, search-engine experts say.
"There is big money in .edu links because they are 'trusted sites' in Google's eyes," said David Harry, president of Reliable SEO, a SEO specialist based in Canada.

6 Dirty SEO Tricks You Must Avoid

By Katherine Noyes, PCWorld
The past several months have afforded several high-profile examples of how search engine optimization, or SEO, should not be done. Last fall it was DecorMyEyes and the case of the abusive business proprietor, and just recently it was JCPenney and the case of the short-lived black hat success.

Such stories are by no means the only ones out there, of course--they've just drawn more publicity than most. Either way, examples like these are a rich source of instruction for the rest of us and a good reminder that in SEO--as in so many aspects of life--there's a right way to do things, and there are wrong ones.

Want to improve your company's search rankings? Then make sure you don't try to play any of these dirty SEO tricks.
1. Cloaking Your Content

The No. 1 top offending SEO technique, according to both SEO software firm SEOmoz and Google's own guidelines, is to design your Website so that search engines see one thing while human visitors see another. This is commonly called "cloaking," and it's generally considered the dirtiest trick there is.

Car maker BMW kindly provided a vivid illustration of this technique a few years back, as well as what happens to those who try it. Specifically, it was discovered that BMW's German Website was using what are called "doorway pages," or text-heavy pages sprinkled with select keywords, to attract the attention of Google's indexing system. The particular search term it focused on was "used cars."

So, when users searching for "used cars" found the BMW site at the top of Google's rankings, they were naturally tempted to click on it. What happened then, however, was that a JavaScript redirect would send them directly to BMW's main page, on which used vehicles featured minimally if at all.

BMW's reward for its cloaking efforts? Google unceremoniously kicked the BMW site out of its index, as Google engineer Matt Cutts explained in a blog post from 2006.

2. Acquiring Links from Brokers, Sellers or Exchanges

The second worst dirty trick, according to SEOmoz, as well as one apparently employed by both DecorMyEyes and JCPenney, is to pay a link broker or participate in other link schemes so as to get numerous links to your site from all across the Web.

The reason this trick is tempting is that Google's page ranking system factors in the number of links pointing to a page when it tries to evaluate that page's importance. It's also tempting because it can work well--at least in the short term, as JCPenney recently demonstrated.

Why shouldn't you use it? Well, mostly because it's in direct violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines, and it can get you severely punished, as JCPenney learned. If you participate in a link exchange program--whereby you link to a spam site in exchange for their links to you--the outbound links you install are also another factor that will negatively affect your rankings.
3. Duplicating Content

If a Website operator offers the same content on multiple pages, subdomains, or domains, it can result in extra traffic and higher rankings--or at least, so the thinking goes. Unfortunately, it's another violation of Google's Webmaster Guidelines, and it can get you kicked out of its index.

Other instances in which content sometimes gets duplicated include affiliate programs that offer little or no original content, auto-generated content that's packed with keywords but makes little sense to human visitors, and content "scraped" from legitimate sites and then modified minimally.

Not only will such techniques get you punished by Google, but they'll also turn away human visitors. Note that when content is duplicated legitimately, such as for printer-friendly versions of articles, there are ways to alert Google so it doesn't misunderstand.

4. Keyword Stuffing

The keywords used on any Web page are a major factor in that page's ranking, but it's a bad idea to use them indiscriminately or deceptively. That includes using too many of the keywords you're hoping to optimize on--thereby exceeding any kind of naturally plausible keyword density--and it also includes packing keywords in hidden text, different-color fonts and tiny type.

Once again, Google engineer Matt Cutts offered some additional explanation in a 2007 blog post, along with an illustration: Alex Chiu, whose Web page featuring "immortality devices" was at the time stuffed with irrelevant keywords. Guess what? Chiu didn't show up in Google's index. (Since then, it appears to be back, presumably because the keyword stuffing has been corrected.)

A useful test, as Google points out in its guidelines, is to ask, "Does this help my users? Would I do this if search engines didn't exist?"
5. Banking on Negative Reviews

Although it was disputed by at least one SEO expert, the owner of the DecorMyEyes site believed that the more negative reviews and comments his site got--and there were many, thanks to his atrocious customer service--the better the site's rankings, primarily as a function of all the extra links and traffic. For a time, too, his strategy worked pretty well, for whatever reason.

In response to the case, however, Google says it has since tweaked its algorithms, though it didn't explain specifically how. My assumption is that the overall sentiment of a site's reviews are now a factor. So, lest anyone be tempted, this is not a sustainable strategy, nor a smart one.

How To Boost Search Results, Without Ticking Off Google

Posted by Eric Savitz
Written by Brian Goffman

The New York Times recently reported that Google (GOOG) had “manually reduced” many of J. C. Penney’s (JCP) top keywords after the company was caught using a “black hat” SEO tactic for acquiring inbound links. Penney’s strategy consisted of getting a high number of inbound links to jcpenney.com with anchor text like “bedding,” “area rugs” and “skinny jeans” from sites with no content or relevancy around those items. In doing so, they broke one of the cardinal rules of search engine optimization, which is that the content you create, the pages you build, and the links you acquire should be both natural and relevant. Although many companies use this strategy to drive traffic to their Web sites, it is an extremely risky proposition. The more the content or links you acquire are outside of the guidelines that search engines like Google apply, the higher the probability that you will get penalized (e.g. dropped rankings) or worse – put into the Google Sandbox, where an entire domain is removed from the search index.

Here are some things to consider in your company’s SEO program to keep your brand – and Web site – in Google’s and Bing’s good graces.

First, some “black hat” things to avoid:

Link Farms: A link farm is a group of Web sites that all link to every other site in the group. The primary purpose of linking schemes is to manipulate search engines, as opposed to adding actual content to the Web. This behavior can get you dropped or banned entirely from Google.
Cloaking: Search engines look at all text contained on a given Web page and use it to determine the relevance of that page to a given search query. What search engines can see and what a person can see on a given Web page, however, are not always the same. Cloaking involves adding text that is the same color as the background, thus making it invisible to the human eye, while keeping it visible for search engines.
Doorway Pages and Redirects: Doorway pages are fake pages (a/k/a spider food) that are designed to cater to search algorithms, but are never actually seen by users. Doorway pages, and their sister tactic, redirects, are used for the sole purpose of tricking search engines to get a higher ranking. This practice is strictly forbidden by almost all search engines, and the penalties for those who get caught are stiff.
Irrelevant links: Some sites will allow businesses to buy links with whatever anchor text they want, regardless of whether it is relevant to what they are actually selling. Among other questionable practices, J. C. Penney bought links from sites that had nothing whatsoever to do with bedding, area rugs, or skinny jeans.
And some better tactics:

Know your SEO strategy: Whether you are a small-to-medium business doing your SEO in house, or an enterprise using an external SEO provider, it is critical to have a finger firmly on the pulse of your SEO strategy. Just as businesses carefully monitor employees and other service providers to ensure quality control, accountability and brand management, they also need to have mechanisms in place that allow them to track and control the strategies and progress of their SEO providers. There are many software programs now available that allow companies to audit SEO strategies, and nip bad practices in the bud before they result in harsh consequences. In addition to monitoring SEO tactics where inbound links are placed, businesses must also be clear with SEO providers about the strategies they want them to use, pre-approved tactics, and make sure that policies surrounding SEO and other online marketing efforts are clearly and strictly enforced. According to official statements released by J.C. Penney, the company was unaware that its SEO service provider was using black hat tactics, and it has now fired the provider. Whether J.C. Penney actually knew what was happening or not, they still bear at least some of the responsibility for the predicament in which they are now embroiled. More importantly, regardless of who is actually at fault, J.C. Penney, its brand, and its bottom line, will be the ones paying the price.
Treat your brand and website as a long-term investment. Good SEO is not quick, but the benefits of it can last a long time. While SEO traffic takes time to build up, it will sustain and build on itself over time. It’s a marathon, not a sprint. If you need quick traffic, look at paid media campaigns like paid search, targeted display and smart email.
Invest time and resources in creating good content. Good SEO is built on high-quality content. Mediocre content that is optimized for search engines might result in site visits, but it certainly won’t keep visitors on the site, and it won’t get you customers (i.e., ‘converted’ visitors). Some Web sites are famous for creating content with the sole purpose of optimizing for search engines. Last week, The Huffington Post got lots of attention for its headline, “What Time Does the Super Bowl Start?” The headline resulted in a number one ranking on a Google search on the topic, but didn’t exactly improve HuffPo’s reputation or credibility. While HuffPo took the easy route to attract site visitors, investing time and resources in creating good content that both serves as a useful resource and contains optimized keywords and phrases is crucial to ensuring that website visitors not only go to your site, but stay there. Creating the content and syndicating the content in a smart way will result in higher visibility to your audience and, yes, good quality links back to your site.
Invest your budget in building links, not buying them. The process of link building requires time and resources invested in conducting research, writing content, syndicating the content, and reaching out to relevant audience sites and engaging in that conversation. Short-cuts are not an option. Buying links is certainly the faster and easier route, but the return on investment won’t be as high. The only way to truly build a good reputation, large following, and recognizable brand is to invest the time and resources necessary to research, create content, and establish relationships within the industry.
Your brand is your biggest long-term asset. This is especially true online where reputations are critical and the speed of conversations is increasing at an exponential rate. If you want people to do business with you online, you need to take care that your brand is presented in the most favorable light possible, which includes using white hat SEO practices.

The keyword and competitor analysis is as in-depth as any of its competitors and all the on-site work is being overseen by web design experts with an average of eight years' experience in on-site SEO. It is within the field of off-site SEO, however, that SEOmasters.com truly stands out. The reason that their success rate is so high compared to their competitors' is due to their 1,000-plus portfolio of authority websites, covering a wide variety of industries, and our ground-breaking use of dedicated support sites.

Google gets more social

Last week, Google updated its search engine to put more emphasis on results from relevant social sources, the company announced on its official blog.

If searchers have linked their social networking accounts to their Google accounts, the search engine will use this information when generating search results. For example, if the searcher is trying to find information about a company and his or her friends have posted a link to an article about that business, then that link may be displayed in the search results.

While Google's new social search will not use Facebook for any of its query results, the company did announce it will use information provided by users' Twitter, LinkedIn and Flickr accounts, with more to come as the service evolves.

"Today we're doing a little bit more to bring you all the goodness of Google, plus the opinions of the people you care about. As always, we want to help you find the most relevant answers among the billions of interconnected pages on the web. But relevance isn't just about pages - it's also about relationships," explains Google's product management director, Mike Cassidy.

This latest move emphasizes why it is so important that companies leverage both B2B search engine optimization and social media,as the two channels are slowly begin to affect each other more and more.

Webmaster explore ethical internet marketing options

by Margarette Mcbride

One of the many popular methods used in Internet marketing is SEO. Search Engine Optimization, or SEO, is one of the most widely used methods to improve a website’s visibility in the World Wide Web through major search engines such as Google, Yahoo!, and Bing.

However, though successful and effective, SEO requires a lot of work, understanding, and patience not only among SEO specialists, but also among the clients that outsourced their SEO needs. This is because its techniques and methods requires time to grow to achieve its effectiveness in SEO. These techniques are normally known as White Hat SEO Techniques.

But there are several techniques used in SEO which can offer quicker results compared to the use of White Hat SEO techniques. However, according to many SEO Philippines experts, these types of techniques are usually those that search engines are trying to prevent, which is why these major search engines have continuously changed their algorithm to address the adverse effects of these techniques in their search engine result pages or SERPs. These types of SEO techniques are known as Black Hat SEO.

Effectiveness and Effects of Black Hat SEO

What is Black Hat SEO? Black Hat SEO is a term given to SEO techniques that causes adverse effects in the natural algorithm of search engines. It aims to manipulate and deceive search engines into thinking that a website contains legitimate contents for a specific search query until users found out that this website lacks the necessary information than they have expected. This would reflect greatly on a search engine’s reputation in providing the right information for their users.

Though search engines had continuously changed their algorithm, there are still a number of Black Hat SEO techniques that many SEO experts have used in the market to quickly improve their rankings in major search engines.

But according to many SEO experts, such as those from SEO Philippines companies, Black Hat SEO can only be as bad as it is if its used abusively. Many SEO experts today have combined White Hat SEO with Black Hat SEO.

Black Hat SEO techniques are only used to quickly raise a website’s ranking in search engines, while making use of White Hat SEO for permanence in ranking. Once they have achieved their goal, they will then drop the use of Black Hat SEO and stick to the use of White Hat SEO techniques. And most of these websites are 90%-100% relevant to the keyword they are optimized for, such as the keyword SEO Philippines for an SEO company in the Philippines.

However, according to many SEO experts, though how honest these websites’ intentions are, they still affect the natural selection of search engines for relevant websites, which is why these techniques are still known as Black Hat SEO techniques, which can ban a website if it was caught using one of those techniques. Online PR News – 21-February-2011 –Aditech SEO Services, an established Search Engine Optimization (SEO) firm in India, claims that it is profitable for clients to hire dedicated SEO experts. The company claims that it will benefit them immensely. The chosen expert will only work for the client for the specified duration. Duration for which the expert is made to serve is also decided by the client.

The biggest benefit of this practice is that the expert will work exclusively for the client. Their entire attention will be towards the development of the client’s website. They will also spot the areas that need improvement and advise the client accordingly. It is qualitative and inexpensive to hire dedicated SEO experts. Clients can also learn extensively from this practice.

A high profile company official was heard, “Aditech SEO Services offers what the client wants when it comes to SEO! Be it the entire service, hiring one of the experts, or consultation. Our suggestions and strategies are trusted and followed by the clients. We understand the importance of this practice and hence advise clients to hire dedicated SEO experts if needed instead of the entire service.”

Aditech SEO Services is based in Ahmedabad, Gujarat but provides this service all over the world. It is in the market since a considerable time. It believes that many times, the company requirements are such that can be fulfilled by a single professional. One need not contract out the entire project to the service provider. It advises the clients to opt for professionals instead of services in such circumstances.

Another senior company executive remarks, “Not all the firms offer the facility to hire dedicated SEO experts. We do! It is given to the clients as an option. This measure is taken after extensive market research. It would be beneficial to the clients if they choose a service that fits their requirements. If their requirement is for a single SEO expert, there is no point in hiring the entire service!”

Social Media, SEO and Web 2.0: Crucial Tactics for Law Firm Internet Marketing

Law Firm Internet Marketing News– So much information on how to approach law firm Internet marketing, and where to put your money has been thrown at you as you began your search on how to create a successful online advertising and marketing campaign. Confusing terms like search engine optimization (SEO), social media, law firm websites, and blogs have been swirling in your head as you decide where to put your marketing bucks, as Internet marketing firms explain how and why each facet of your campaign is beneficial to one another.
No single marketing component is “powerful” enough to stand alone in terms of bringing visibility and new clients to your law firm. A comprehensive law firm marketing campaign is imperative to creating brand awareness, visibility, and to attract new clients and cases. Utilizing lawyer websites and private label attorney newsrooms, an exclusive marketing product offered by CEPAC Inc., SEO and social media can actually benefit one another.

This is how:

• Law Firm Websites: First, you need to be found on the Internet, most notably on Google, Yahoo and Bing by potential clients. People no longer thumb through the Yellow Pages looking for a lawyer or solely rely on a personal recommendation; they are searching the Internet and doing their own educated research. If you don’t have a website, you likely won’t be found. This attorney website serves as the foundation of your Internet marketing plan.

• Attorney Newsrooms/Blog: CEPAC’s law firm newsrooms center around user-generated content, which is published on the newsroom by the law firm. These should include firm updates, commentary, news articles, press releases, and other content that attorneys choose to add. These private label attorney newsrooms, complete with a search engine optimization feature, allow your law firm’s message to be heard across the web with the push of a button. The powerful online legal newsroom product, Smart News Technology, gives your law firm the best chance for pickup on search sites such as Google, Yahoo and Bing. These articles also link back to your law firm website, boosting your visibility and rankings on search engine result pages (SERP) by creating authoritative links. The articles can also be broadcast to your social media pages, gaining even more for visibility for your attorneys.

Google also gives more weight to fresh user-generated content, which is the content your attorneys post on your legal newsroom. This user-generated content actually boosts your website rankings on Google. Each time that your content is changed, added to, or updated on your law firm website; Google Caffeine will consider the updates as new content, allowing for better placement and relevancy in search engine results pages (SERP), as previously reported in, “Law Firm Marketing News: User Generated Content Packs a Bigger Punch with Google.”

• Social Media: Creating social media accounts on Facebook and Twitter are key in successful marketing campaigns. Pretty much everyone is on the social media sites, which creates a pool of potential clients for your law firm to market to. Posting articles, news and updates on the firm, verdicts and other relevant information, which provides a back link to your website helps to boost your rankings every time it is “re-tweeted” or your link is shared by your friends on Facebook.

Google prides themselves on providing the most relevant search results to consumers, so in doing so, they recognize social media people as real people. When the post is shared by the social media users, it helps Google gauge the relevancy of the page. While sharing on social media sites don’t necessarily create a lot of “juice,” it does create trust among users and potential clients who see the link, the number of people that have viewed it and thought it was relevant enough to share.

• SEO: Lastly, to make everything cohesive, you will need a comprehensive SEO program for your website and blog. SEO will help place your law firm website and articles at the top of SERPs and above your competitors. Your legal website needs to be optimized for keywords and phrases relevant to your practice area and who you are marketing to, so that local consumers searching the Internet can find your website on search engines.

Cepac, lawyer marketing agency offers highly effective Internet marketing, advertising, social media campaigns and online public relations; along with more traditional lawyer marketing approaches including television, radio and print advertising.

Ask, Analyze, Apply: Creating a (Search) Data-Driven Marketing Strategy

Political figures like President Obama need to appeal to passions and interests, as a New York Times Magazine article put it.

Agree or disagree with Obama's in-office efforts, but there is a similar parallel to such in marketing.

There's a need to continually ask what drives consumers (passions) and what daily needs incent their desires (interests).

Marketing is not about you, it's about them.

The blending of passions and interests, often referred to as implicit and explicit behavior in marketing, is what drives efficiencies.

If we aren't asking, we're often either too broad or too narrow in our definition of online targeting.

Tactically speaking, consumer search activity is a bridge to understanding and informing all digital marketing channels.

Based on the explicit (keyword search) and implicit (category of search, frequency of search), you can start to deduce if your existing/planned online targeting techniques are actually relevant to your core audience.

Lee Odden expertly articulated the bridge between search and search engine optimization (SEO) at OMS.

He specifically spelled out how search analytics can allow you to build customer profiles, create audience-specific content, and inform other online channel to invest in more customer/prospect-centric targeting solutions (i.e., behavioral targeting, audience segmentation).

In short, it's about asking the right questions (why, where, when?), using the right tools (search) and ultimately, your ability to analyze data to create actionable insights to prioritize marketing initiatives.

Applying insights from consumer search activity requires distilling mission-critical learnings (i.e., users searching for my product/service are x age, live in x location and largely male or female) from the warm and fuzzy data points (i.e. search query pathing) that are more challenging to apply to immediate media buys and/or content development.

Particularly within display, there is a growing need to:

Apply search insights to develop customer-based lifetime value (LTV) targeting.

Re-evaluate the metrics by which we measure success. CPA, CPL, and CTR are short-term, campaign-specific metrics that should be analyzed across multiple campaigns, multiple media channels, and synthesized to inform attribution/conversion-based models.
In sum, ask more about your target audience -- starting with your customer.

Leverage search as a means to learn and analyze.

Finally, apply insights in a meaningful way that will allow short and long-term measurement to occur across multiple marketing channels.

Aaron Kahlow will speak during the Update on Real Time Search: I Want It Now! session on Day 2 of SES London.

Is Bing’s New Toolbar a Social Blow to Google?

Bing’s toolbar has been the subject of controversy lately, with Google accusing it as being a tool to help Microsoft’s search engine to copy some of their search results. A real search engine marketing war of words – Bing strenuously denied this accusation, and have updated their toolbar with a Facebook feature that might set it ahead of its competitors.

Google seem to be looking to make amends for their sparse showing on the social scene, with rumours of Twitter takeovers and Groupon acquisitions being abound of late. Bing though, if their latest toolbar update is anything to go by, are looking to seize on Google’s social media dalliances and attract more social searchers to their services.

Bing has added a Facebook function to its toolbar (for Internet Explorer) that allows users to check their pictures and Facebook wall in an instant. An incredibly handy service for people who want to search and check their social features at the same time without having to switch tabs all the time.
Google’s social search still seems light years behind in comparison, even when they’re trying to make improvements to their search engine optimization services. For instance, they have recently updated their search results to include personalised results from users’ social networks, such as YouTube, Twitter, Flickr and Quora. Facebook results are still tellingly absent.

Is it just a case that Google can’t get a grip on social media and are terribly out of touch? The solution seems obvious to Bing – a lot of people use Facebook and log into their accounts on a daily basis. So why not make the transition between search and social as seamless as possible? Google’s stance is understandable – Facebook represents something of a threat to their advertising income, so they need to tread carefully.

But the more search engines that take Bing’s open-arm stance, the more people will jump the good ship Google to sail on the social sea.

SEO's Achilles' Heel: The Misdirected Attack on Search Engine Optimizers

This past weekend, while most of us were making a last minute dash to pick up something for Valentine's Day, The New York Times published a long account of how JCPenney was showing up with "uncanny regularity" on the top spot for a variety of search terms.

The week before that, while most of the world was wondering how Arianna Huffington was going to handle being content chief over at AOL, Slate posted an article on how The Huffington Post website was using "SEO" to trick poor Google and the public into reading another article on the madness of "The Right."

Then back in January, while most of the country was digging out from Snowmageddon, an episode of "The Good Wife" featured a baby-faced defendant that was worried that the dark secret of his profession, that he's a search engine optimizer, will destroy his chances of a fair trial.

(Thanks a lot CBS for that last one, by the way. It's always fun to have to explain to your mother that, no, you're not that kind of SEO and she can proudly return to her quilting club with the knowledge that her son is not one of "those people.")

If you read enough of the non-industry press about SEO these days, you would swear that we're all a bunch of dastardly villains of search engine marketing.

Where They Got It Wrong

At one point in the Slate article on HuffPo, author Farhad Manjoo writes an obviously completely unresearched whopper of a statement about SEO:

Before I go on, let me stop and say a couple of more important things: Aol, Aol Acquires Huffington Post, Aol Buys Huffington Post, Aol Buys Huffpo, Aol Huffington Post, Huffington Post, Huffington Post Aol, Huffington Post Aol Merger, Huffington Post Media Group, Huffington Post Sold, Huffpo Aol, Huffpost Aol, Media News. See what I did there? That's what you call search-engine optimization, or SEO.
Actually, that's what you call SEO. Those of us that know better about the dark underbelly of our profession call that trick "keyword stuffing," or in layman's terms, "cheating." Calling keyword stuffing "SEO" is like calling steroid use "baseball." Sure, people in the business use those kinds of tricks, but it's not what gets you in the hall of fame; it's what gets you banned from Google All Mighty.

During the introduction of The New York Times article, author David Segal provides a slew of examples of specific terms that were searched for on Google with his thoughts on who should be in the top spot:

Someone types the word "dresses" and hits enter. What will be the very first result? There are, of course, a lot of possibilities. Macy's comes to mind. Maybe a specialty chain, like J. Crew or the Gap. Perhaps a Wikipedia entry on the history of hemlines.
Then, like some hipster kid that's forced to get his Toughskins from Sears, he is "shocked, shocked to find" that JCPenney is in the top slot. What shocks me is that he didn't realize that JCPenney actually does sell dresses, along with bedding and area rugs and a ton of other things that they could have ranked on top for if the store and its agency had only played by the rules and not cheated by using paid links and anchor text spam to get there in such a hurry.

The story isn't that HuffPo and JCPenney are getting to the top of the ranks for certain terms, both companies are in the business of creating products, whether it be articles of clothing or articles about clothing, that have every right to be near the top. The story is that they were cheating to get to the top and SEO veterans like myself and thousands of others that make our living helping people show up on search listings will tell you, cheating may be the fastest solution, but it's bound to get you in trouble.

Using Protomatter in the Genesis Matrix

Remember in the third "Star Trek" movie where the cocky young scientist that turned out to be Captain Kirk's son admitted that the reason why the new planet they created was falling apart before their eyes was because he used the fantastic sci-fi plot crutch that moved the story along without actually telling you anything he called "protomatter" in the Genesis matrix because he couldn't figure out any other way to make the damned thing work?

You don't have to admit it out loud, man...we all know you saw the movie. You're among friends.

Anyway, that's what tricks like keyword stuffing, paid links, and anchor text spam are to the people who work every day in search engine optimization - cheating. We all know these practices exist and, like all good masters of our craft, we all know how to do them so we can see them during the site audit and tell our clients to knock it off before Matt Cutts catches them in their own version of a New York Times article.

So why do respectable companies like The Huffington Post and JCPenney end up using protomatter? Some people may jump right to ignorance or blame it on the fact that they got some bad advice from their brother-in-law or the C-level staffer in the office that is an armature SEO on the weekends. However, I chalk the whole thing up to two factors: greed and a complete lack of patience.

You Can Only Tell the Boss to Be Patient So Many Times

The young Dr. Marcus seemed like a nice enough kid, a little hot tempered, but you wouldn't mind him along on the landing party. So why did he throw the unstable element in the mix? Well, if your mother and all of Starfleet were breathing down your neck for results off all that grant money, you would probably punt, too.

We have all been there; you're a consultant, part of an agency, or just another cog in the in-house team and you're doing everything right and all on the straight and narrow. The keyword rich content is in place, the site is as search engine friendly as Matt Cutt's own blog, and you're putting in the time and leg work to get legitimate links back to your site. Then, a whole week later, the COO is darkening your door asking where all of that organic traffic is you promised him last week.

After a month or so of this line of questioning and the COO has started asking for daily updates on your progress, you consider the unthinkable and make the call to the dark side. You inform everyone around you that what you're about to do is a really gray area, but if you want speedy results, this is the deal with devil they need to make their Q4 numbers. Next thing you know, you've got a small collection of paid links out in the world and it's actually working...well.

So, you do a little more...then a little more...and so on and so forth until one Saturday morning in February, there you are in black and white in The New York Times. Agencies are fired, internal staff are questioned (and probably eventually fired once the heat is off them for awhile), and your boss is forced to go, hat in hand, to see the Wizard of GOOG to get back home to Kansas.

The Misdirected Attack on Search Engine Optimizers

Many of my SEO colleagues are usually quick to blame Google and the other search engines for not being better at catching these cheating ways. Others will blame the black hat SEOs for tempting law abiding companies to the dark side with promises of higher rankings and free traffic. But I was on the client side of the table for too long to know better.

Am I saying that JCPenney and HuffPo are completely innocent? Of course not, somebody has to sign the checks. I'm just saying that it's easy to point fingers at the big bad SEOs and we should probably look a little deeper into the matter. Frankly, I blame the white hat SEOs (myself included) for not being better at convincing their clients that this process takes time to do it right. I blame the executives who push for more organic traffic right here, right now, despite being told that search engine optimization was more of a marathon than a sprint. The real Achilles' Heel of HuffPo, JCPenney, and all the rest that resort to these tactics, is greed and a lack of patience.
