How To Make Amazing Pebble Mosaics!...

We all like reminders of our precious holiday breaks. One of the best memories you take with you, is strolling along a sandy beach looking at shells and pebbles, turning them over and picking up driftwood. So, making a mosaic from these typical items seems to be an innovative idea.

It may be just that you return from your holiday with them as a reminder of that lovely break you had, no matter what the weather was like.

Using pebbles for mosaics is an interesting idea, being not only easy to make, but they are very effective and quite popular.

How you assemble them is another thing! Thought needs to be given to the design and subject of your picture. Creating this type of work you really need to have an abstract look. Bear in mind the colours chosen for your pebbles will make or break your mosaic.

If, like me, you are inspired by the seas, here itself you need to choose your colours accordingly. So you would require some sand coloured for the shore, and whites and different greys to a sort of a maroon colour.

The darker colours will be right at the top of your picture and moving downwards greys to white finishing with sand for your shore at the foot of your work.

So what is the damage? What will I need? Quite a list I am afraid, but it will be worth it! matt acrylic varnish, a deep picture frame, panel pins, whitewood primer, blue emulsion, white paper, medium grade sandpaper, a decorators brush, some half inch MDF and some PVA adhesive glue.

Added to the above you will need some driftwood and some gravel and pebbles. These extra items can be put to good use. At all times you need to keep your picture image in your mind before you now begin to arrange your treasures, driftwood and pebbles into sizes and colours.

Eliminate anything you do not require for your design and, if you have a few bits of gravel to hand, this is good for filling in any gaps.

Now remove the back of your frame plus the glass and the mat. Rub down the frame with sandpaper, then paint the frame with white primer both inside and out and let it dry.

Once this is dry take out your blue emulsion and paint your frame. Let this dry, then you can rub this down with sandpaper so that you have glints of your white primer coming through, in what I call, a distressed look. It would be better then to apply an acrylic matt varnish to the frame to seal it.

Put your white paper on to the back board of the frame and proceed to draw round it. So we have an area to work on for your design. Place your driftwood and pebbles on this, working out your design as you go.

The back of your picture frame needs covering with MDF, cut to the size of it. You then need to place your backing board on to the centre of it to get your work area for your mosaic and simply draw round it.

The tricky job now is moving your mosaic to the MDF. Do this carefully. You need to put a splodge of PVA glue on each pebble or bit of driftwood before you position it on the MDF.

You have to think about the pebbles colours as you form lines with them. You can alter these fairly easily, but it needs to be quite a tight fit. So, now everything has been glued down. Just do a final check that it is really tight fitting.

Maybe now you will find you need to fill in a few spaces. Don't bother with small ones, but bigger ones you can use a fine gravel on. Any other driftwood can then be glued into place. You will now need panel pins to pin the frame into position. Start at the back and go through your board to your frame.

My experience with the speed drumming is a strange one. Basically, one October day, while picking up some drum sticks at a local music store, I noticed drummers using a device called a "Drumometer. This "drumming speed" measurement device used a practice pad for a striking surface with an embedded piezo trigger. The trigger was connected to a counter-timer computer brain that had a count and a timer display.

And most of the really successful speed drummers obviously did not want to give away ALL their secrets (understandably). So, I did what I could. And after spending 3 weeks (1-2 hours per session, 4-6 days per week), I managed to improve my speed by about 60-70 beats per minute. I really didn't expect to win though; since several of Mike Mangini's Berklee students were to be part of the regional competition.

Drumming at times can be a bit strenuous, though you will be able to play for hours when keeping the body relaxed. Without performing warm-up exercises before playing, the body can become tense and show signs of fatigue within a short while. We will explore exercises that are quick and easy encompassing the whole body from head to toe.

Vinnie Colauita once said, "Just play in 7 for like an hour". This is especially insightful as we can often get caught up in studying things too closely and miss the point. Sheer repetition will help lead to more comfort in odd times.

Sometimes the drum heads may even puncture when the hit is hard. If all this still does not provide you with good reasons to go for a new one at regular intervals, then you should realize that once it becomes weak it is difficult for you to play the roll or the fast chops. As a drummer you should change your drum heads after every six months.

However, six months is not an ideal time. If you have been playing the drum too often lately, consider changing it even though you may have changed it four months back. Signs that should tell you it is now the time for you to change are indents and cracks.

Improvement: Each practice session should create a challenge for the musician to accomplish something never previously done. This could be a new rudiment, piece of music, or exercise, it could also be a new tempo for an old exercise, etc. And the tempo does not necessarily have to be faster - just different

Drummers like Zigaboo Modeliste and Johnny Vidacovich mixed second line with syncopated funk, developing a style called "second-line funk drumming". This style was popularized in many famous bands that came from New Orleans like the Meters (see below). Explained - Candlemaking For Novices!...

Candle creation is pretty easy to do on the whole. I am only surprised that more people don't take a crack at this bearing in mind that candles are such a well-liked item. Not merely do they establish a feeling of warmth and release perhaps healing powers as we find them restful, but they also give us dusky and intimate atmospheres to relax by.

What is more, you need very few items to formulate them by. At the outset you will need several moulds, these are as a rule to be found in rubber otherwise plastic, nevertheless they need to be compliant. Once this is dry, you can make a bit of a start by giving the wall a coating of paint or a primer. This should, in fact, make it easier to paint your mural.

As this most likely is to cover a large area, I would probably sketch this out on A3 paper by drawing 2 or 3 inch square boxes, what is called a grid actually. Then work your design on the grid. Once you have sussed this out, the next step I would take, is to work it so that you have exactly the same amount of squares on your wall area.

As an example, if you use 2 inch squares, one of these could represent 2 feet square on your wall. You can mark your squares on the wall by using a coloured chalk that will show up on your painted wall. Your chalk should be quite easy to erase afterwards.

I would not advise you using a small grid though, because it can be quite a problem trying to get the chalk off. You also really need to think hard about what you paint in the grid, as you will need some very definite lines to shape your picture.

Basically, using this method you need to copy your sketch onto the matching squares on your wall. It is important too, before you paint, to consider which is the best type of paint to use. In most cases a good make of acrylic paint should work well, but, depending on the size of your mural, this could work out to be quite expensive.

If you are of the opinion that this is going to work out to be too expensive, only use acrylics on the important parts and use a paint you would use for the house for the majority of your mural. However, make sure it is a good brush you use.

You may find, you need a special type of paint that will withstand the sun beating down on your mural. Take a few moments, now and then, to just move back from your mural and see how it looks from further away, as well as right up to it.

Anyway, you will not want the sun reflections coming off your work, so choose a paint with an eggshell finish or matt. You also could, when it is complete, brush on a clear varnish. Not only will this make it easier for you to keep it clean, but it will also act as a layer of protection.

A New Philosophy Of Cartooning

I entered the business of cartooning in March of 1997 having no idea what was to come. Before I embarked upon this mysterious venture, I decided it would be to my advantage to consult with top cartoonists around the country. I was surprised how many of them were open and available to speak with me were. Fortunately, I was both too young and naive to know NOT to bother the masters. So when Charles Schulz picked up his phone, I started asking the five journalistic Ws (Who, what, when, why, and where). His (and others) advice turned out to be just what the doctor ordered. I was starting to develop a philosophy of cartooning even though I had not even yet begun my amazing adventure into online cartoon merchandising.

Schulz went into cartooning because in his words "I tried a lot of other things and couldn't do them very well". I could easily identify. I asked him if there was a way to make a living in cartooning. There was a long pause. He assured me there was plenty, but not to expect it in newspapers. He told me that even if you do get syndicated, the money is still just pennies per newspaper and that the smart way to approach it, that is, to look at it as a career, is image merchandising, that is, reproducing images on such gifts and collectibles as coffee mugs, aprons, T-shirts and the like.

I told him I did not draw very well (which is true) and, that I wanted to try something very new and different. It was to be a color cartoon in which the artwork, for the most part was more fine art than cartoon art, and that I wanted a different look and feel to each cartoon, but a theme, focused on wordplay and picture-play in which, at times, the viewer might have to take a second or two to get it.

He told me that a large percentage cartoons are team efforts that is, an artist and writer, and that if I did not feel my own artwork was up to snuff, to recruit an artist to draw my concepts. He also encouraged me to read as much as I could about Walt Disney because what I was about to attempt was actually a Disney model without animation; he actually called it Disney meets Gary Larson. I was and still am flattered.

A few other major cartoonists were helpful as well; Leigh Rubin (Rubes), Dave Coverly (Speed Bump), and Jon McPherson (Close To Home). I was amazed, again, at how open and available they made themselves. In fact Leigh and I became good friends and talked regularly on the phone. He was already one of the worlds leading cartoonists, and I was just starting. That didnt matter to him. I will never forget that kind of generosity and his willingness to lead me in a direction that made it work for me. And of course the same is true for Charles Sparky Schulz (Sparky by the way was what he liked to be called. That was the name of his favorite dog. I have a tendency get along fellow animal lovers, and Schulz also had an unique wit about him, which was not revealed in his family-oriented "Peanuts", which was more family-oriented. On the phone, he he purveyed a more SNL-type sense of humor, always ready to talk and joke about current events.

A "common theme" persisted regarding the philosophy of cartooning, among all of the artists. That is, Sure, you must make a living in this world, but keep the day job. Cartooning is a labor of love, and, a few make a living at it. One must approach it with a very open mind and a love for making people laugh, and to be flexible, as the Internet at the time, was changing the whole nature of the comic strip biz.

Pragmatic advice is hard to find. How did "Sparky" know the Internet was changing? How did he know it would change how we perceived cartooning? I knew about "vision" and that some people "saw" things others could not, but could he be this brilliant? He was. Licensed merchandise became even more of the key to making it work than Sparky Schulz had felt; and he had seen it coming. Today, though my cartoons appear in publications worldwide; mostly trade magazines, college textbooks and on websites, the majority of my take is from the sales of funny gifts and collectibles. When I look back over the past twelve years it has all becomes a blur. I have had the opportunity to work with some of the world's top illustrators of cartoons. I wrote/they rendered.

Though I know it has been hard work, just as I was told it would be, I also have been very lucky. I became what might consider "a success" in a strange business, when told, chances were as good as winning the lottery, even less so if one was/is not such a great artist such as me. But I continue "the battle" as, in some small way, I figure if just one person laughs a little more in his or her day, due to something my team created, the world is just a little better as well.

Yue embroidery is crafted in areas around Chaozhou, Guangdong province. This style is famous for its vivid patterns and vibrant colors. Unlike Xiang embroidery that focuses on bringing out the inner spirits of things, Yue embroidery emphasizes on depicting the outer beauty of objects. On a piece, all the details are closely arranged to contribute meaning to the main theme, with very little space left unworked.

Shu embroidery is made in areas around Chengdu, Sichuan province. In the past, it used to be the most popular embroidery style in all of China. It became famous as early as Eastern Han dynasty. People like it for its delicate colors, even stitching, and sophisticated craftsmanship. Nowadays it is commonly used to decorate everyday items like quilts, pillows, and clothes.

There are other embroidery styles in China, including Gu embroidery, Long embroidery, Xinzhou embroidery, Jinnan embroidery, and a number of ethnic styles used by the different ethnic minority groups living in China.

Generally speaking, there are no "fake" embroidery items on the market, since any style can be used by anyone to create a piece of work. But the quality can still be judged based on the material, the design, and the workmanship.

Questing

One of the things that you will absolutely need to do in order to level quickly is questing. Do as many as you can. I recommend you fill your log book with quests and then go away and finish those quests.

The key is to do them efficiently. I use an add-on that places a directional arrow on my screen. This add-on helps determine the most efficient way to run the quests that you have. You'll find a link to a place you can get one of these at the bottom of this article.

Efficiency

The best way to level quickly is by being efficient. The way I suggest increasing your efficiency and better using your time is to kill your way to and from quests. This will make a big difference to your experience gained and you'll move through the levels much faster without wasting time. You'll also be able to make a good amount of gold by doing this as well.

Group Quests

At low levels group quests often take up a lot of time. You'll sometimes find yourself waiting for other players to show up which is really annoying. If you don't have a high level friend then I suggest avoiding group quests while at low levels.

Quest Difficulty and Zones

Do not be in the mindset that you have to complete every quest in a zone before you can move on to another. In fact I encourage a bit of moving around. If the quests in one zone are getting a bit hard and you are dying quite a bit try moving to an adjacent zone that has some lower level quests. You can shoot through those and then come back for the harder ones when you have leveled a bit.

Rest and Relax

When you are going to leave the game always log out in an inn or capital city. When you log out in these places you build up rested experience. Believe me you will love the 200% experience that you will have for awhile when you get back.

I've been a fan of Tom Cruise since his first appearance in the Outsiders. When I heard about this movie, I couldn't wait to see it. I am usually not a big fan of history movies but this one had me engrossed from the first few minutes. Cruise played an exceptional character that I forgot all about his younger days.

Valkyrie is a film that take a look at the Hitler regime in a way we have never seem before. Cruise's character, Claus Von Stauffenberg, was one of the few who fought to take down Hitler, the most evil tyrant the world has ever seen. It has a suspenseful and entrancing plot and give an in depth look at the time,place and minds of the characters.

Filmed mainly in various locations in Germany, where many of the actual events occurred, including scenes of the historic Bendlerblock along with incredible costumes by Joanna Johnston gave an overall realistic feel, and yet is was modern enough, with many interesting characters to keep your interest as opposed to giving you the feeling like you were watching something from the history channel.

And I must say, that I am actually glad that I got to see this movie on DVD instead of in the theater, because it has tons of extras and features, plus at home you didn't have the distractions of other rude theater goers. The plot was intriguing and I didn't want to miss a moment of it.

Adding to the setting and the impact of the film was the musical score. Though most reviews are mixed, I feel this is a great film that is full of suspense, character development and romance, as well as so different insight to WWII.
