Can we gain in static markets?

Does the ?hippo market?, when the index trades in a narrow range, mean investors should steer clear?

Fresh fears about the eurozone forced the FTSE 100 index of Britain's biggest companies down again this week to trade around 1,000 points lower than its peak level 11 years ago. After being stuck within a narrow range mostly below 6,000 for the past six months, investors are entitled to be disgruntled.
Some are beginning to ask if a City clique of hedge funds are selling into every rally, making it a waste of time and money to pursue tried and tested strategies of "buy and hold". Others question if there is anything investors can do to make money in a market that seems destined to trade sideways.
When it comes to stock market predictions, there are only two types of expert – those who don't know and those who don't know they don't know. So, bearing in mind these words of caution from Warren Buffett, Your Money asked a panel of seven unit and investment trust fund managers, who hold many billions of pounds of investors' money, how they would answer the cynics.
Conspiracy theories were played down by Andrew Bell, chief executive of the £980m Witan Investment Trust, who pointed instead to current events. He said: "The FTSE has been range trading since November because the flow of positive news from economic growth, earnings and dividends has been countered by worries about inflation, China acting to slow its growth rate, other emerging economies tightening monetary policy, oil price rises threatening to squelch growth, a never-ending death scene from the euro and, finally, another Icelandic volcano.
"I don't believe it reflects the ordinary investor being the mug while the City trades on the smart view of things. There is quite a split in the City between bulls and bears, so I think everyone is trying to invest and trade as applicable, according to their take on evolving events and their investment timetable.
"Personally, I am a watchful bull. Provided the recovery carries on without mishap, time is on the side of equity investors from these ratings."
One measure of value is the price/earnings ratio – or how many years' earnings per share would be needed to buy those shares today.
The FTSE 100 current price/earnings ratio is just over 11 times and the average yield – dividends expressed as a percentage of share prices – is 3.2pc net of tax. The index does not look expensive on either basis and buyers today may obtain bargains, suggested Jeremy Tigue, manager of the £1.8bn Foreign & Colonial Investment Trust.
He said: "The principal reason the FTSE 100 is going up and down so much within a limited range is the day-to-day conflict between the generally gloomy global macro data – for example, the Japanese earthquake, eurozone problems, concerns about a slowdown in China – and the generally positive micro data, such as companies reporting good results, dividends going up and takeover activity.
"Pretty much the same thing happened this time last year and the FTSE fell below 5,000 before the good corporate news helped unleash a rally back over 6,000. We think the present directionless period is more likely to end with another move up than down."
If that seems to bear little relation to the grim economic reality at street level in Britain, then one explanation may be that about two thirds of the revenue of FTSE stocks is now generated overseas.
Tom Dobell, manager of the £6.8bn M & G Recovery open-ended investment company (Oeic), explained: "We take comfort from the fact that many companies listed on the London Stock Exchange are truly global in nature. The UK is home to some world-class companies that are well placed to benefit from the long-term dynamics driving the world economy.
"We believe very strongly that focusing on the long-term prospects of individual companies, rather than second-guessing the short-term direction of markets, is the best way to create wealth for investors. We have confidence in the recovery approach and remain convinced that our strategy of backing the underdog will reward patient investors."
James Anderson, manager of the £1.8bn Scottish Mortgage investment trust, is another who believes the best hopes of economic growth are to be found overseas.
He said: "Our focus has been more of an international than a domestic one for a number of years now.
"Notable areas of interest include China where we see a number of leading, often domestically oriented, rapidly growing and innovative companies as having promising long-term prospects. We are also excited about the prospect in the wider technology-related sphere – we are seeing rapid advances in a number of areas including cloud computing but also health care, biotech, robotics, artificial intelligence and alternative energy."
But international exposure can prove a double-edged sword because commodities – including the biggest-ever London Stock Exchange float last month of Glencore – now comprise about a third of the index and have suffered sharp setbacks recently.
Jeff Hochman, a director of technical analysis at Fidelity International, said: "Global equity markets in general, and the FTSE in particular, have shown a high correlation with commodity prices over the past few years, as they are viewed as a good proxy for global growth, economic recovery prospects and hence earnings.
"The commodity bull market slowdown is itself a reflection of the gathering uncertainties that investors currently have towards future global growth prospects, and these uncertainties manifest themselves in trading ranges, as at present."
Job Curtis, fund manager of the £660m City of London Investment Trust, pointed out how this could make some funds more risky than investors expect: "At the end of last month, the oil sector was 19.4pc of the FTSE 100 and the mining sector was another 14.2pc.
"So these two sectors, where share prices are ultimately linked to volatile commodity prices, together account for one third of the FTSE 100. This accounts for some of the recent volatility in the index. It also highlights the dangers of investing in index-tracking funds."
Edward Bonham Carter, chief executive of Jupiter Asset Management – which has £24.5bn under management – agreed: "Index funds or 'closet trackers' are not necessarily a low-risk option. The hippo market, where indices wallow around doing very little over the long term with significant short-term bouts of volatility, is alive and kicking.
"The FTSE 100 was at these levels in 1998, so this hippo market has been going on for some time. Such conditions have prevailed for long periods in the past, such as in the US between 1966 and the early Eighties, and this hippo market has the potential to continue for longer than people may imagine." Smart and no-sweat options to chill out at home

Staying cool this summer doesn't mean you have to spend a fortune to make your home a haven of comfort. Take a look at these smart, no-sweat options that will tempt you to stay indoors

UAE summers are an entity unto themselves. Most of us get through them by bracing ourselves, sticking the thermostat on the lowest setting for the entire season and hoping for the best. However, there is so much more we can do to make ourselves and our homes more comfortable — and save some money in the bargain. Two things are central to achieving a cooler home: efficiency — of the technology we use and of the surroundings in which we deploy this technology; and well planned interior concepts.
Let's start with the new technological investments we can make this summer. Sometimes it seems as though home air-conditioning units just aren't designed to withstand the humidity and blazing temperatures we have to suffer during this region's hottest months. Leaking coolant, reduced efficiency, eventual meltdown — sound familiar?
All this may be a thing of the past this summer. LG has come to our aid with Titan — a new product — a premium residential air-conditioning model. This updated version of an already successful, high-tech LG air-conditioner is specifically designed to deliver powerful cooling and to withstand the region's often punishing weather conditions.
So how does it work? The Titan can blast out cool air over a distance of up to ten metres — the longest range of any air-conditioner on the market today. The Jet Cool function and the four-way swing system enable the unit to blow cool air in practically any direction at maximum speed, making rooms cooler in the shortest possible time. Additionally, a special multistage tropical compressor ensures powerful cooling even in extreme weather conditions.
H.S. Paik, president of LG Electronics Gulf FZE offers consumers helpful advice when looking to refit their home-cooling system this summer: "Consider what you need the air-conditioning unit to provide and do research before deciding on the product. Important things to look for include optimum cooling capacity of the air-conditioner and capability of the filtration system to ensure good-quality air and, if possible, the filtration of dust, allergens and virus spores. Look at the Energy Efficiency Ratio (EER), which is directly related to an air-conditioner's power input; the higher the EER, the better the efficiency and the lower the power consumption. Seasonal Energy Efficiency Ratio (SEER) is also very important for the ME region, as a good SEER ratio indicates improved power consumption during summer when the air-conditioner is being used the most. Finally, ensure that the air-conditioner is certified as a safe product and installed by certified engineers. LG's Air-conditioning Academy located at Jebel Ali (04-8051472) can provide assistance to potential users and help them make the right choice."
If you're looking for double insurance on the cool front this summer and want to supplement your central air-conditioning system further but without compromising on style, Dyson has the perfect cooling technology. Their Air Multiplier fan range was launched recently in Dubai's Jumbo Electronics stores. The new desk, pedestal and tower fans work differently from conventional fans by using Air Multiplier technology to draw in air and amplify it by 15-18 times. The result? An uninterrupted stream of smooth air, with no unpleasant buffeting. "I've always been disappointed by fans. The spinning blades chop up the airflow, causing buffeting. They're hard to clean and children always want to poke their fingers through the grille, so we've developed a new type of fan that doesn't use blades," James Dyson says.
Whatever cooling system you have at home — old or new — there are many small changes that you can make around the home and in your lifestyle this summer to ensure your cooling system is running at its most efficient capacity, most of which won't cost you a single fil.
Lifestyle changes
- Over the summer months, keep your home closed tight during the day. Don't let in unwanted heat and humidity.
- Keep your home well ventilated at all times of the day - preferably with the air-conditioner set at a suitable level to keep moisture and humidity at bay. If you live in an older building with a central air-conditioning system that suffers habitual breakdowns as soaring temperatures precipitate an unserviceable demand, electric fans will provide a satisfactory back-up and much-needed ventilation to protect your personal effects from humidity damage.
- AC maintenance is key. Normal dust build-up can reduce air flow by 1 per cent per week. Replace or clean your AC's intake filter once a month to allow for greater airflow and ensure your air-conditioning units and vents are clean and unobstructed at all times. Have your AC serviced once a year to make sure it's running at peak efficiency.
- Resist using a dehumidifier when your air-conditioner is on. The dehumidifier will increase the cooling load and force the air-conditioner to work harder.
- If you don't need a light on, turn it off. Lightbulbs generate heat while producing light and this is highly undesirable in the summer. Use Compact Fluorescent Light bulbs (CFLs) as these use 75 per cent less energy and produce 75 per cent less heat than incandescent lightbulbs or use LED lights which use even less energy and give off less heat.
- Other common sources of internal heat gain include appliances, electronic devices, the oven and steam. Try to keep cooking at a minimum or only at night; minimise midday washing, using the dryer and having hot showers. Humidity makes the room feel warmer, so keep it to a minimum and make sure you turn on ventilating fans to help extract warm, moist air.
DIY checks
- If you're conscious of the damage that air conditioners do to the environment - the fossil fuels they burn will end up making your summers hotter - a great alternative is the classic ceiling fan. They don't use much energy, but this one appliance can make a room feel six or seven degrees cooler. Good fans make it possible for you to raise your thermostat setting and save on air-conditioning costs.
- Apply V-Cool filter films to windows if necessary: the latest news in window technology is "low-e films" for low-emissivity. These thin metal coatings block most solar heat gain while transmitting most visible light.
- Paint your roof and walls white - if you live in a villa and get permission, paint your roof and exterior walls with a specially formulated reflective paint or just paint it white. The reflective effect will help to keep your home much cooler.
Landscaping and interiors
If you live in a villa or have outdoor space surrounding your home that you are able to attend to, there are a few minor landscaping adjustments that will help keep your home cool.
- Install awnings on south-facing windows, where there's insufficient roof overhang to provide shade.
-Plant trees around the house.
- Avoid landscaping with lots of unshaded rock, cement or asphalt because it increases the temperature around the house and radiates heat to the house after the sun has set.
- Hang tightly woven screens or bamboo shades outside the window during the summer as this can stop 60-80 per cent of the sun's heat from getting to the windows.
Interiors have a significant role to play in cooling your home over the summer, from the quality of fabrics you choose to the materials making up your accessories and surfaces right through to the psychology of colours. Your decor and furnishings will either enhance or work against any technological cooling system in place.
Breathable fabrics such as cotton and silk should replace non-breathable synthetics for summer to keep your skin cool and fresh. When choosing the colour scheme for your fabrics and home, bear in mind that our experience of colour is based on our personal and cultural associations. Colours are seen as warm or cool due to our life experiences and long-held associations. Yellow, orange and red are associated with heat - from fire or the sun; blue and green with the coolness of water, sea, sky and foliage. The psychological association of a colour is often more meaningful in terms of effect than the immediate visual experience, so surround yourself with cool, fresh colours that have refreshing associations such as blue, green, beige and grey. White is also a cool colour due to its reflective qualities and is perfect for summer window treatments.

- The Titan features LG's air-purifying system equipped with special features that efficiently cleanse and purify the circulating air. Longevity has also been integrated into the Titan's design to ensure it withstands the punishing demands of consumers in the region: it can function continuously for 24 hours a day in temperatures up to 60°C and the anti-corrosion Gold Fin coating gives added resistance. LG showrooms, DG Sharaf and select Carrefour stores, Dh2,699.
- With variable airflow, adjustable positioning, impressive stability and strength, what more could you ask for in a fan? Well, hygiene and safety are key features: the Air Multiplier is easily wiped clean with a cloth, preventing hazardous dust build-up that hampers the performance of conventional fans and AC units. Besides, there is no blade or grille, thus making it child-friendly. Jumbo Electronics, Dh1,119. Visit www.dyson.ae for details.
- Choose a cool breezy blue as a background colour and then light, airy, white furniture to give a clean, fresh feel. Metropolitan Club 2 Seater Sofa, Dh22,100; Metropolitan Club Armchair, Dh14,050; Taiga Rug Skin, Dh8,625; Tresor Side Table, Dh6,150; Tresor Coffee Table, Dh8,875 — all available at B5.

- Stone wall treatments boast natural cooling qualities as they don't retain heat easily unless placed in direct sunlight. Grey is another colour to consider for your furniture and soft furnishings as we associate it with the cool touch of stone. Jensen Supreme Continental Sofline II bed, B5, Dh7,800 for the headboard and Dh11,200 for the mattress (both king size). Ottoman, Dh7,750.
- Shiny stone surfaces give off a cool, watery effect when they reflect light and this Ariano vase is in stone grey — a colour we associate with a "cool touch". B5, Dh820.
- Metallic accessories and surfaces also give off a "cool touch" vibe; the Bata vase (15cm) and Ming vase (13cm) are available from B5 at Dh1,625 and Dh1,100 respectively.
- Inspired by nature and the cool outdoors, Diane Von Furstenberg's 100 per cent soft Floral Batik set is a comfortable choice in hot temperatures. Bloomingdale's Home. Duvet cover, Dh1,500 and pillowcase, Dh450.
L- inen and cotton are excellently cool choices for soft furnishings and upholstery as they're breathable fabrics and it's an added bonus if you can find them in icy blue colours. Fraiser cushions, Freedom Furniture, Dh99.
- Using light colours for curtains will keep the room feeling fresh, but ensure the fabric is opaque so as to block incoming sunlight. White reflective modesty curtains between the window and the curtains will keep incoming heat out while still allowing natural light to flow in. The combination of the two layers allows you to control the flow of light and heat in the room. Set of peach curtains, Western Furniture, price on request.
- Junckers Merbau Parquet, 22mm Soul Collection Solid Wood flooring will provide a cool surface that will help maintain lower temperatures throughout the home and is softer and more luxurious to the touch than cold stone or marble. B5, Dh485-Dh860 per square metre.

Made from only the finest "A" grade mulberry silk and designed in-house, Gingerlily products are not just glamorous, these also ensure you get a cool and comfortable night's sleep. The ultimate breathable material, silk helps regulate body temperature and is hypoallergenic — making it a great choice for allergy sufferers. Silk also mimics the protein we have in our skin, helping to keep hair soft and preventing skin from drying out while minimising wrinkles. Ivory Taupe bedcovers, Dh2,000 for a double duvet cover and Dh405 for a pillowcase, Selva, Dubai.

Home affordability a London strength

If you're thinking of changing homes, you've probably been monitoring home prices and interest rates lately, and you might also be following affordability trends.
Affordability is a concept that takes into account what you earn, the cost of borrowing money and the average price of a typical home.
To explain how this works, if your income increases while housing prices and mortgage rates remain the same, it will take a smaller percentage of your income to cover your cost of housing. If your income increases at the same time rates are declining, housing becomes even more affordable for you. When interest rates rise above 10%, or even 20% as we saw in the early 1980s, it hardly matters what you earn or what the house is worth -- the carrying costs can significantly decrease affordability.
Recent news from RBC Economics Research in its annual home affordability study shows that despite interest rates remaining incredibly low, national home prices were pushed upward by increased costs of construction materials related to rises in oil and gas prices. This resulted in affordability for Canadians slipping slightly in the first quarter of 2011. RBC senior economist Robert Hogue noted "provincial levels generally continue to stand near their long-term averages, suggesting that owning a home (in Ontario) still remains affordable."
In fact, very modest house price increases provincially mean relatively unchanged levels of affordability in Ontario, while the demand-supply equation also remains balanced, with just a slightly stronger position for sellers. All things considered, the Ontario market appears to be on a sustainable path so far this year, ahead of the expected changes in interest rates.
Here in London, affordability remains positive for both homeowners and home buyers, and housing affordability continues to be one of our city's greatest strengths, attracting both new residents and increased business investment.
If you are considering buying a home, now is the time to buy.
It is widely anticipated that medium- and long-term interest rates will rise before the end of this year, triggered by hints from the federal government. Supporting this notion is expert economic forecaster Peter Andersen, who was quoted in the current issue of the Canadian Housing Industry Economic Update prepared for the Canadian Home Builders' Association, suggesting that the low interest rate environment will not last much longer.
Five-year mortgage rates are already on the move, increasing from 4.09% at the beginning of March to 4.54% now, and will likely move to over 5% by year-end. Rising commodity prices, supply shocks from the Middle East and Japan, and stronger than expected U.S. economic growth could all become factors that may heighten the risk of spill-over price effects into general inflation.
A variety of housing types, mortgage products, and payment options make home ownership a solid decision for many. When you consider London's housing affordability on top of our great parks, schools, health care and rich culture, the decision to buy local and buy now is obvious.
Shellie Chowns is president of the London Home Builders' Association.

Masked gang rob OAPs’ life savings in home raid

Police: The Star bringing you the latest news 24-hours a day.

Callous crooks targeted a Doncaster couple in their late eighties while they were asleep in bed to rob them of their life savings.
A gang of masked men burst into their Rossington home and subjected them to a terrifying ordeal before making off with what police described as a “substantial” amount of cash.
The pensioners have been left “absolutely devastated” and feel they have lost their independence.
Police today appealed to the public for information about the robbery, which they are hoping will have been talked about in pubs and clubs across the village after it took place last week.
The raid took place on Thursday, May 19, at around 11.25pm, when three masked men forced entry into the couple’s home.
The exact location of the crime and the identity of the victims are not being disclosed because of their vulnerable state.
The two occupants at the address - an 87-year-old man and an 89-year-old woman - were in bed at the time of the robbery.

The elderly man received minor injuries to his shoulder when he was hit by one of the gang.
The three men stole a substantial amount of money from the property, although the exact figure is not being disclosed.
One of the officers investigating, PC Craig Nicol, said: “We believe this is a targeted attack on an elderly couple. They were asleep in bed when three men forced entry into their home.
“They have been left absolutely devastated following the robbery. It has completely shaken them and destroyed their confidence and independence.
“If anyone has heard anything in the local community or can provide any information at all relating to the incident, please get in contact with us.
“The couple are distraught and feel extremely vulnerable after this intrusive crime.
“I would urge anyone who has any information, or who believes they may know the identity of the men who have committed this crime, to please come forward to help us catch those responsible to ensure they are never able to do this again.”
Police are continuing to investigate the robbery and establish how the couple were targeted.
The couple’s family members are too upset to make any public comment about the incident.

Holmes, Sweet Holmes

From the time he was very young, Mike Holmes, who grew up in Toronto's East End neighborhood, watched his engineer father work on their home and learned the tricks of the trade. Even when the younger Holmes was just 6 he rewired their house under his dad's supervision. When he wasn't working on the house, he was taking apart his toys or building a tree house. He progressed to his own renovation company that built custom homes. Years ago he saw the wisdom of green homebuilding for the benefit of the planet, people's health and a home's durability. Along the way, his straightforward advice and outgoing personality landed him his own show on HGTV, "Holmes on Homes," and the new spin-off, "Holmes Inspection," and he's authored several best-selling books with the "Make It Right" moniker - the series title came from one of his father's bits of advice about trying to get things right the first time - including the new "Make It Right: Inside Home Renovation" (Time Home Entertainment, 2011).
We recently caught up with Holmes following his keynote at the 2011 National Green Building Conference and Expo in Salt Lake City, to talk about green building and home improvements. Following are his edited responses.
Question: How'd you get interested in going green?
Answer: I've always been interested in building the best way possible, given the technology available. As new and better ways of building develop, I'm interested in using them. Building more sustainably - with less waste and more energy efficiency - is the only way now to go because it's better for you, your family and the environment. It's also a way for your home to pay you back.
Q: You often talk about "high-performance" green homes. What does that mean?
A: It means it has a solid, tight building envelope, particularly on the exterior, and is "thermally broken." That means there's no air leakage, which could lead to energy loss, condensation and mold. "High-performance" also means high efficiency in terms of appliances and energy savings, or how much it costs to operate your home.
Q: Tell us about Holmes Homes, your new community of eco-friendly, sustainable homes in Alberta, Canada. What makes them sustainable? Are they affordable for "average" folks?
A: There's no reason a home can't be made green and still be affordable. It's about construction methods and the footprint. People need to be more aware how oversized houses are wasteful and inefficient. Holmes Homes that are going up in Alberta are built to be durable and are being constructed from concrete, a green, lasting material. It will save in the end, since you're building with better products, especially insulation and mold-resistant drywall. You're going to pay now or later! If you build better, you're more likely to stay.
Q: What are easy ways homeowners can go green?
A: It's a lot easier to go green if you're starting from the ground up. But there are things you can do to improve an existing home's energy efficiency and greenness. Homeowners should spend money first on the outside structure for protection - many things they can't see but which are critical to efficiency, longevity and healthfulness - rather than initially on interior finishes, what I refer to as the mascara or lipstick. What's key on the outside? Good insulation in the basement and attic; well-insulated windows, doors and roofing to reduce solar heat gain and heat loss in cold months - I like a fire-resistant metal roof, for example; the best long-lasting cladding, whether brick or vinyl; a solid foundation that doesn't get wet; [and] ventilation to improve indoor air quality. It's important to me that whatever you put on or in your house will be durable - that it will last a long time without needing to be replaced. That will save resources and keep waste from landfills.
Q: What are some less important green strategies?
A: I think there's a lot of "greenwashing." People are fooled into thinking something is green when it's not much different than what's been around. People need to educate themselves and find out where and how products were made, what they contain, where they were shipped from, how they were used, and how they'll go back to the earth. The effect of installing bamboo flooring is less important than making sure you've got no air leakage that wastes energy. I'm very careful about shows that people should watch; they often give the wrong information.
Q: So many homeowners still seem fearful of green because of the perceived extra expense ...
A: If you're planning to stay in your home, you'll make back your money. But, when people flip houses for profit, they aren't interested in investing in their home or environment. You generally spend five to 15 percent more to go green, but green varies. Document what you've done for resale.
Q: How do they calculate payback?
A: It depends on the investment. Solar panels are more expensive up front than low- or no-VOC paint. In some areas, you can lease solar panels and cut energy costs. You also may be able to sell extra power back to the grid and make money.
Q: What about a national green standard?
A: I think a national green standard - similar to the Eco-logo or Green Seal or Energy Star programs - will provide a consistent, legitimate, tested and proven standard that will help homeowners know what's truly green. The program could be adapted across the continent to allow for different climatic zones and take into account different issues that occur in cold or temperate zones. When it comes to green and houses, it's not "one size fits all." It's easy to get lost in all the conflicting claims and information. I would love to see this, but it will take work to make builders and the government get on board. We're working on it, and homeowners should demand it.
Q: Your new show, "Holmes Inspection," informs viewers about home inspections. What viewers are learning?
A: [They're learning] why a good home inspection is worth every penny. There are so many parts of a home that are hidden, but an experienced professional can spot clues that indicate there might be hidden problems or problems deliberately concealed. But it's a business that's not regulated by the government, so anyone can call themselves a home inspector. All you need is a business card and flashlight - and even the flashlight is optional! It's a new industry, so there are lots of cowboys out there and no sheriffs. Until government starts to demand qualifications and licensing, it's up to consumers to be aware of these issues and ask questions, especially about mold, termites [and] asbestos.

St. Jude fundraiser home combines dream qualities, energy efficiency

For the next few weeks, the public can tour the dream home and buy tickets that might make it their own. Hefty’s creation is Oklahoma City’s 2011 St. Jude Dream Home, open free to the public until June 19. The winner will be announced June 26.

EDMOND — The turret anchoring the front of this house might be what puts the “dream” in “dream home.”
Then again, so could the theater room inside, the soaring ceilings throughout or the game room upstairs, complete with a wet bar. The windows up there overlook a golf course, which creates a rolling, fairy-tale panorama of lush green.
And out of sight — but not out of mind — fully encapsulated foam insulation keeps it all comfortable. For Oklahoma City builder Chad Hefty, 40, that’s an important point.
“It’s kind of the Old World style,” he said. “But I want to be known more for energy efficiency than anything.”
For the next few weeks, the public can tour the home on weekends and buy tickets that might make it their own. Hefty’s creation is Oklahoma City’s 2011 St. Jude Dream Home, open free to the public until June 19. The winner will be announced June 26.
The dream home giveaway is staged in about 30 cities across the country and is the largest fundraiser for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital in Memphis, Tenn. Actor Danny Thomas founded St. Jude in 1962; about 5,700 young patients are treated at the facility each year.
Hefty first crossed paths with St. Jude as production manager for Manchester Green Homes, which built its 2009 Dream Home here.
“It was such a great experience,” he said. “There’s not a better charity to work with.”
When the developers behind Fairfax Estates and Golf Community landed the 2011 Oklahoma City dream home, they turned to Hefty, now an independent builder and owner of Chad Hefty Custom Homes. The home is at 3008 Saint Fergus Drive. The neighborhood is east of Coltrane Road, north of Covell Road.
“They’ve always known I was interested in doing it again,” Hefty said. “So, since I’ve done it before, they called and asked if I’d be interested in doing it again this year.”
Developer J.W. Armstrong donated a lot in Garden IV of his Fairfax development, which is no small feat, Hefty said. “It’s unbelievable to completely donate a $55,000 lot,” he said.

Dream home reality

Construction started in January. Hefty said he had a house plan in mind when he undertook the task but had to go back to the drawing board to ensure it would fit the lot. “It’s a 3,800-square-foot house, and rather wide, so we had to redesign the house,” he said. “But it looks like a castle with the round turret on the front. It’s a pretty unique house.”
The idea, he said, is to showcase both his talents as a builder and the emerging neighborhood.
“It basically comes down to how cost-effective we can build a dream home, the home somebody would love to win, and raise the most money for St. Jude,” he said.
Builders shoot for homes valued at $300,000 and above.
“It makes people more willing to put out that hundred dollars,” he said.
St. Jude’s Dream Home fundraisers began with a Shreveport, La., property in 1991, and they have raised $200 million for the hospital in the 20 years since, according to St. Jude figures. It’s not just the developers and the homebuilders fueling the efforts, though. It’s also donations in varying degrees.
“When I did this two years ago, we had something like 20 percent donations,” Hefty said. “This year, we had a lot of people step up, saying they’ll do everything. And when it came down to it, with the economy, their mouth got a little ahead of their pocketbook and couldn’t do it. But then stuff would fall into line to where we’re at like 81 percent donations right now. So that’s amazing.”
That had Hefty juggling vendors he was not used to as the stressful days ticked down to the grand opening, including some from out of state.
The site was bustling with activity 10 to 14 hours a day, seven days a week in the month leading up to the opening. But that is part of the rush, he said, watching everyone involved going above and beyond.
“And then everything just falls into place.” Plus, he said, it all helps a worthy cause. “It’s just about the kids,” he said.

Habitat for Humanity's Women Build finishes Muncie home

MUNCIE -- It's hard to know how 5-year-old Payton Courtney feels about the fact that her new home was built entirely by women.
Nicolle Courtney tours her new home built Habitat for Humanity volunteers after being presented with the keys on Thursday. Courtney will live at the home with her three children, Tyler, Payton and Brayden. / Kelly Day / The Star Press
Along with her mother, Nicolle, and her two brothers, Tyler, 11, and Brayden, 3, Payton stood as patiently as a 5-year-old could Thursday evening, as she listened to Greater Muncie, Indiana Habitat for Humanity's executive director Lindsey Arthur talk about this new home, the first in Delaware County constructed as a part of the agency's Women Build program.
Truth be told, Payton had other things on her mind, such as figuring out where to put her bed in her new bedroom and, more importantly, how to keep her brothers out of her new room.
"Look, I can shut the door," the middle Courtney child said while taking the tour of her new Habitat for Humanity home. "Now my brothers can't bother me. Shut door means 'don't come in.' "
Payton's mother was afraid the path to home-ownership was a door closed to her and her family until she took a friend's advice and investigated the Habitat for Humanity option.A single mom working as a medical assistant, she thought she would never make enough money to move out of the family's two-bedroom apartment in Albany. That changed a year and a half ago, when Courtney learned she would own a home in the Whiteley neighborhood in Muncie."It's kind of like getting a new car when you didn't think you'd ever get one. It's exciting and fun, but it's a little overwhelming," she said after signing the 20-year mortgage on a no-interest loan. "What if the economy gets worse? What if I lose my job? Questions like that are in my head. But I know my kids are excited, and that's enough for me."
Along with Arthur, Jason Haney, the field operation manager for the local Habitat and many of the female volunteers who helped in building the Courtney home, neighbors and representatives from the Whiteley Community Council welcomed the family to the neighborhood and encouraged them to get involved in the community.
"We're thrilled to see a new family have a new home. What an opportunity!" said Cornelius Dollison, vice president of the WCC. "In our last meeting, we set up a one-year membership for you with the community council. We just want to make sure you're a part of a neighborhood that's excited about the changes we're making."
The Courtney boys strolled through their new home on their own and with their grandparents, hearing from their sister about her plans to keep them out of her room.
Tyler, a fifth-grader at Albany Elementary School, was understandably disappointed about leaving his friends and teachers at his old school, but after touring his new home he began to change his mind.
His family now has a house, a three-bedroom space that includes a full kitchen, a living room and a yard to play in with his siblings.
"I'll make new friends," the fifth-grader said. "I'll miss my old ones, but it'll be OK. I have their numbers, so maybe they'll come over to my house and play instead of me always having to go to theirs."

Saving starts at home

The Energy Saving Trust's Chief Executive Philip Sellwood tells Editor Amy Caddick how, with the right guidance, energy consumption can be better managed by individuals…
The UK is undergoing an energy transformation. The way in which the general public, businesses and industry manage their consumption is being scrutinised more than ever. With the emergence of the government's Green Deal and the push for individuals to take more responsibility, the Coalition's aim of creating an energy-efficient Britain could soon become a reality.  The Green Deal is a 25 year strategy that will set out incentives for homeowners to reduce energy consumption by encouraging energy saving.
Gaining control of individual consumption is one of the most important steps in creating a low carbon society, as Philip Sellwood, Chief Executive of the Energy Saving Trust, discusses.

"Recent events around the world illustrate how much costs are going to rise and how difficult it is going to be to secure supplies of energy in the future," he tells Editor Amy Caddick. "Individuals taking control of their own consumption, therefore, is really important.""Firstly, if people are actively managing their energy consumption as individuals, when you aggregate that it has a really positive impact on energy supplies," says Sellwood. "This means you don't actually have to produce as much in the first place. Secondly, if there is a breakdown of supply due to a fault or natural disaster, then you're in a position to be able to export your own electricity. Clearly that puts individuals in a much better place than if they are entirely reliant on a centralised delivery system."

Energy security is also an area that has been the topic of much debate, particularly surrounding oil. Conflicts in the Middle East have led to fears over supply, and so the need to find other energy sources such as through renewables has become a challenge for many nations, not just the UK.

These recent events have simply highlighted that supply can be maintained and protected if individuals take more responsibility for their own consumption.

"There's no question that householders can do more," states Sellwood. "I think we're all agreed that even the most advanced households have still got a lot they can do, not only in terms of implementing energy efficiency, but also heat technology or renewable energy such as solar panels or ground source heat pumps.

"In terms of what the government can do to help, firstly I think they'd be wise – and I'm sure some parts of the government are starting to look at overseas experiences – to look, for instance, at how Germany now has the world's most successful ground and air source heat pump industry, or to Spain and what they've done with photovoltaics. We can use these examples to see what could be done here in the UK."

Incentives for change

The Green Deal is a good stepping stone in aiding individuals to take control of their own energy supply. Other schemes like the Renewable Heat Incentive, aimed at assisting with the financial burdens of installing such green technologies, certainly offer households motivation to make the change to renewables.

"The government are delivering various incentives for feed-in tariffs for renewable energy and the renewable heat incentives, which is going to come in next year for households," Sellwood describes. "Whilst there's a lot that individual householders can do, there's obviously a need for the government to take a lead in terms of making available sufficient financial and non-financial incentives when it's needed, so that individual householders
feel it's worthwhile."

Decreasing consumption in homes doesn't always need to be a vast change, however. There are small measures that can be implemented to make a big difference. Energy saving light bulbs are one such device and, indeed, many homes already use these, but there are many others.

"It is really important to encourage people to install energy saving devices and renewable technologies," says Sellwood. "These activities should be seen as normal behaviour, not special behaviour. There aren't many devices you can install in the home where you can guarantee that it will save you money year-in year-out, so in the way that we wouldn't think it at all odd to install a TV, a stereo system or a dishwasher, we shouldn't really see it as anything other than normal to be implementing energy saving measures. The big advantage is, unlike your TV and your dishwasher, it saves you money."

Teaching the technology

Education, however, is a problem. Many householders are not aware of the profound difference their actions can make to national consumption. Teaching individuals about this and how they can save energy and reduce their energy bills needs to be a focus over the next few years.

"We often find that even in cases where energy-efficient technology is being installed in homes, there is not enough education to teach householders how to get the best out of those systems. Education is therefore imperative," urges Sellwood. "In the future we'll have smart meters installed directly into people's homes, allowing individuals to take responsibility visibly for their own energy consumption. Educating individual citizens and householders to use this new smart technology is absolutely essential.

"My fear is that we will install all this very smart technology and the householder will not benefit nor
will we reduce carbon emissions because it's not being used efficiently."

Renewable energy sources on a national level seem perfectly achievable and many people support them, but on a personal level it can seem somewhat overwhelming and costly. The Coalition's incentives certainly make it easier for householders to undertake renewable sources in their homes. The question remains whether these incentives work and if individuals are actually implementing their own renewable energy sources in the homes.

"Until recently the cost of energy has been such a small proportion of most domestic household budgets that it's never really been an issue," explains Sellwood. "However, the average household energy bill is now over £1,300 a year, which in many cases is higher than their council tax bill. People are realising that they've actually got to take action in order to get those bills down."

"Since the government launched its feed-in tariffs, the incentive for domestic householders for implementing renewables, 20,000 individual households installed technologies between April and December 2010. That was a direct result of the incentive. Based on these figures, I think it would be safe to assume that the renewable energy sector for householders will continue to grow."

While individuals certainly have a huge role to play in this, Sellwood recognises that the public needs to be guided in implementing these energy saving measures.

"There must be clear, consistent messaging about why it's important to implement energy saving and renewable technology in the home," Sellwood concludes. "There must also be plans for long-term incentives. Short-term incentives that run for a year or two before the money runs out are not effective. There has got to be a commitment, and I think we'll see that with the Green Deal – but people need to be confident they are getting what it says on the tin."

By taking control, individual households can effectively become – with the help of renewables – independent from the grid, explains Sellwood. "This is equally important because there's also an opportunity with energy efficiency and with renewables for individual householders to export back to the grid. So there's the chance not only to save money at one end but also to make money at the other."
The over-reliance on energy and the inability of individuals to control consumption can have a monumental effect on the ability of countries to manage their supply. Taking the recent earthquake and subsequent tsunami in Japan as an example, it is clear to see how efficient handling of energy can improve circumstances. After the damage to the Fukushima nuclear power plant, there were worries that energy supply would be interrupted in other areas of the country. However, due to individuals managing their own consumption in the days following the event, power was not disrupted.

How to Heri an Seo company

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE / PRURGENT
Today, Main Street ROI announced it has released a new free report - "The Business Owner’s Guide to Hiring a Search Engine Optimization (SEO) Company." The new 7-page downloadable PDF report is designed to help business owners make an intelligent, informed decision about hiring an SEO firm.
The free report is available here: http://www.mainstreetroi.com
Every day, more consumers are using search engines to find local small businesses. For example, according to Google, every month more than 10,000 people search for a New York moving company. If a New York moving company’s website does not appear in the search results, they are missing out on potential clients and customers.
As Pete Kennedy, managing partner of Main Street ROI, explains, "Most small business owners already know they want to show up in Google, but they don’t understand all the intricacies of getting there and they don’t have the time or desire to learn."
As a result, business owners often make the decision to outsource to an outside company. However, as Kennedy explains, there are a lot of pitfalls to avoid when hiring an SEO company.

Choosing a SEO company isn’t easy, Kennedy says, because business owners are consistently bombarded by misleading advertising, confusing claims, and unreliable information. Worst of all, Kennedy explains, too many SEO companies employ high-pressure sales tactics designed to force business owners to make rash decisions against their self-interest.

"The Business Owner’s Guide to Hiring a SEO Company" reveals:
* How to Avoid 2 Common SEO Rip-Offs (pages 2-3)
* 3 Costly Misconceptions About SEO (pages 3-4)
* 4 Steps to a Profitable Website (pages 4-5)
* 8 Questions to Ask Before Hiring Any SEO Company (page 6)
Business owners can go to http://www.mainstreetroi.com to gain free instant access to the report.
As Kennedy explains, "Unlike many other SEO companies, we believe that the best client is an informed, educated client. That’s why we created this report, and that’s why we’ve dedicated our business to educating business owners about internet marketing."

Team Adele tops list of Guardian Music Power 100

Guardian releases list of the 100 most influential people in the music industry
Guardian Music Power 100: Adele and her team topped the list Photograph: NBCUPHOTOBANK / Rex Features
They influence the song you wake up to and the tune you whistle as you walk to work – you may not necessarily know their names but they are the among the most important music trendsetters in the country.
Today the Guardian reveals its Music Power 100 list: the most influential people creating, promoting, managing and making money from music.
Topping the list is Team Adele, an astonishing achievement for the 23-year-old singer and the crack squad behind her. Adele, the girl from London with a big voice, has rewritten the music rule book this year with the stratospheric success of her second album, 21. It has topped the US album charts seven times and has spent 15 of the last 17 weeks at number one in the UK. In an industry that increasingly struggles to sell its physical product, Adele has managed to shift no fewer than 6m copies for independent record label XL.
Label founder Richard Russell said Adele was a "special artist" who had conquered the world with talent alone. "The whole message with her is, it's just music. There's no gimmicks, there's no selling of sexuality," he said.
The choice of Team Adele – which includes manager Jonathan Dickins, publisher Paul Connolly and radio plugger Brad Hunner – to head the chart was unanimous, said Cerne Canning, part of the list's voting panel, which included experts from the music industry.
"Adele is the most powerful force in music at the moment," he said. "It is very refreshing to see something so successful done in such a sensitive way."
Showing that the traditional major record label is not dead, Lucian Grainge and David Joseph, CEOs of Universal Music Group and Universal Music UK respectively – home of Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and the Rolling Stones – came in at second place. The dark lord of commercial pop, Simon Cowell, is number three, while BBC Radio 1 music policy executive Nigel Harding is at four.
Artists to make it into the list include will.i.am (11), Lady Gaga (18), Damon Albarn (24), Team Dizzee Rascal (28), Jay-Z (38), N-Dubz (62), Mumford & Sons and Laura Marling (74), David Guetta (86) and Plan B (88).
The list reflects the bullishness of the independent market, with godfather of indie Martin Mills, chairman of Beggars Group – which encompasses XL, 4AD and Rough Trade and is home to acts such as the White Stripes, the National and Jarvis Cocker – at 22; Laurence Bell, founder of Domino Records, at 64; and Lohan Presencer, club promoter and label executive at Ministry of Sound, at 60.
Geoff Travis (at number 58), co-partner in Rough Trade records and another expert on the voter panel, said: "This shows that major labels may still dominate the market but they do not dominate quality music."He regretted that there weren't more women in the list - reserving special praise for Alison Howe, the producer of Later … With Jools Holland (43). "We wanted there to be more women, but I think it is just a sad reflection of how few women there are in position of power in the music industry."
Reflecting the digital revolution that has transformed the music industry in the past decade, the list includes Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt, co-founders of Google, (8), Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook (13), Daniel Ek, founder of Spotify (27), the co-founders of Twitter (37), Steve Purdham, founder and CEO of We7 (68) and SoundCloud founder Eric Wahlforss (72). Youtube, which five years ago would undoubtedly have been higher up the list, crept in at 100. Reflecting the digital revolution that has transformed the industry in the past decade, the list includes Chad Hurley, Steve Chen and Jawed Karim, founders of YouTube (6); Larry Page, Sergey Brin and Eric Schmidt, co-founders of Google, (8); Mark Zuckerberg, founder of Facebook (13); Daniel Ek, founder of Spotify (27); the co-founders of Twitter (37); Steve Purdham, founder and CEO of We7 (68); and SoundCloud founder Eric Wahlforss (72). YouTube, which five years ago would undoubtedly have been higher up the list, crept in at 100.
The sales outlets that have changed the way people buy their music also make a strong showing in the top 100, with iTunes UK at five and Jeff Bezos, president and CEO of Amazon.com, at 10.
Paul Scaife, managing director of industry newsletter Record of the Day and a judge on the expert panel, said the choices reflected the fragmentation of the music business. "The list reflects how there is no centralised way of finding music anymore – the old monopoly has gone."

Bucs sending employees home without pay next week

The process of cutting costs by taking money out of the pockets of folks caught in the crossfire of the lockout continues.
The latest team to join the belt-tightening trend is the Tampa Bay Buccaneers.  Next week, the offices will be shut down, with the employees being asked to stay home without pay.
The team announced the move this morning on its website.
The offices also will close during the week of Labor Day, if the lockout is not resolved by then.  If no games are missed, the employees will be paid for their week-of-Memorial-Day hiatus.
“The Buccaneers remain hopeful that the 2011 season will be played without interruption; presuming this occurs, the plan will essentially provide the team’s entire staff with an extra week of paid vacation,” team spokesman Jonathan Grella said.  “And more importantly, this plan preserves jobs and does not ask employees to work for less or no pay.”
That’s a fair point.  But, still, with all the money that the Bucs were able to pocket last year thanks to the absence of a salary floor and a player payroll considerably south of where that floor would have been (not to mention years of carrying over cap room that was never used), they easily could have decided to push some of that cash forward to cover the salary expenses of the men and women who have done nothing to cause this mess.
