A POWERFUL ARGUMENT; FITTING SOLAR PANELS TO YOUR HOME WILL MAKE YOU GREENER AND CAN EARN YOU MONEY

SUNSHINE and Scotland don't often mix but harnessing the power of the sun could save you hundreds of pounds every year.
Solar power is a great source of renewable energy that many Scots overlook. What's more, installing solar panels is now easier than ever, with plenty of local companies offering quick and easy fitting services.
Even on cloudy days, solar panels can help you make the most of the sun's powerful energy - generating enough electrical power to run your home or provide you with plenty of hot water.
There are two main types of solar panel systems available - photovoltaic (PV) solar panels and solar water heating panels.
PV panels generate electricity that can then be used to run appliances and lighting in your home.
They can cost between pounds 8000 and pounds 14000 to install but they are built to last and can save you thousands of pounds in energy bills over the years.
You can even earn money from your panels, by selling your excess electricity back to the National Grid through the Government's Feed-In Tariff scheme.
This makes it easy for those generating their own green energy to make money from their investment. You can expect to be paid every three months for the energy you sell back to the grid, guaranteed for 25 years.
Solar power specialist Jim Kirkland knows a thing or two about the benefits of renewable energy. As the owner of Solar Electricity Systems, he has fitted hundreds of solar panel systems all over Scotland.

His firm were also one of the first to gain full MCS certification in Scotland to design and install PV panels.
And in the last six months, Jim has seen a huge increase in the number of customers opting to install their own panels. Jim said: "More and more customers are now installing solar panels because they can save money and make money at the same time.
"The panels generate free, clean, electricity and the Government then rewards people for their green efforts through the Feed-In Tariff.
"People hate seeing their electricity bills go up year on year. But those who install renewable energy can inflationproof their bills, say goodbye to hefty electricity prices and enjoy the benefits of being paid for what they produce.
"As soon as the panels are fitted, clients start making their own energy."
Opting to install a solar water heating system can also reap rewards - helping to cut bills and your carbon footprint at the same time.
These panels, which cost about pounds 5000 to install, use heat from the sun to warm water stored in a cylinder. A boiler or immersion heater then makes the water hotter, or provides hot water when solar energy isn't available.
You can get hot water all year long and cut the amount you spend on energy bills. It also cuts your CO2 emissions, making it environmentally friendly. Over the last few years, the efficiency of solar systems has improved drastically.
They can usually be installed in just a day and, once in place, they can last for about 40 years and require very little maintenance.
Jim said: "The systems we use are very quick, clean and easy to install. We can sometimes turn up at 8.30am and be finished as early as 2pm.
"Any type of home, from small terraced properties to large mansions, can benefit from solar panels.
"We can install panels in most homes, with the exception of north-facing roofs. But if you do have a north-facing roof, we tend to find we can use the other side of the roof."
He added: "We only use our own installers and are one of the few companies in Scotland to offer a 30-year manufacturing guarantee." ? For more info on Solar Electricity Systems or a free no-obligation survey and quotation, call 0800 8497 555.
