Valkyrie - A Different Side To WWII

By Patrick Daniels

I've been a fan of Tom Cruise since his first appearance in the Outsiders. When I heard about this movie, I couldn't wait to see it. I am usually not a big fan of history movies but this one had me engrossed from the first few minutes. Cruise played an exceptional character that I forgot all about his younger days.

Valkyrie is a film that take a look at the Hitler regime in a way we have never seem before. Cruise's character, Claus Von Stauffenberg, was one of the few who fought to take down Hitler, the most evil tyrant the world has ever seen. It has a suspenseful and entrancing plot and give an in depth look at the time, place and minds of the characters.

Filmed mainly in various locations in Germany, where many of the actual events occurred, including scenes of the historic Bendlerblock along with incredible costumes by Joanna Johnston gave an overall realistic feel, and yet is was modern enough, with many interesting characters to keep your interest as opposed to giving you the feeling like you were watching something from the history channel.

And I must say, that I am actually glad that I got to see this movie on DVD instead of in the theater, because it has tons of extras and features, plus at home you didn't have the distractions of other rude theater goers. The plot was intriguing and I didn't want to miss a moment of it.

Adding to the setting and the impact of the film was the musical score. Though most reviews are mixed, I feel this is a great film that is full of suspense, character development and romance, as well as so different insight to WWII.
