3. Keep your toes toasty with insulated floors
Insulating under your floorboards on the ground floor can be a great source of comfort, helping you reduce draughts, while saving you around £60 a year in the process! A touch of DIY will also save you an extra £25 each year, by using silicone sealant to fill those unwanted gaps and draughts around your skirting boards and floors. Doing both of the above will save you around 340kg of CO2 a year.
4. Let there be (Energy Saving) Light!
Did you know that cutting your lighting bill is one of the easiest ways to save money and energy in your home? By replacing your ordinary bulb with an energy saving one of the same brightness, you can save around £55 over the life of the bulb. Obviously, turning off lights when you’re not using them, means you will save even more energy!
5. Turn Down the heat!
Turn your thermostat down! By reducing your room temperature by just 1°C you could cut your heating bills by around £55 per year and save 230kg of CO2. If you have a programmer, set your heating and hot water to come on only when you need it for even more savings.
6. Generate Your Own Electricity and Heat
Investing in renewable technologies like solar panels, heat pumps or biomass boilers will not only help reduce your CO2 emissions, it will significantly cut your costs for the future. Renewable energy technologies are a great investment – especially with government financial support now in place.
7. Switch Off!
Don’t leave appliances on standby. If it is plugged in and switched on at the socket, it means it is still using energy. Turning off TV’s, games consoles and mobile phone chargers at the mains will help save you around £35 a year.
8. Insulate your roof
Did you know a quarter of your heat is lost through the roof? Heat rises, so it’s important that your roof or loft is well insulated to save you wasting energy and money. Insulating a loft with no insulation could save you around £175 a year. If your loft is already insulated, check if it needs topping up for maximum savings!
9. Replace Your Boiler
Boilers account for a staggering 60% of what you spend in a year on energy bills, so it’s important to regularly check how efficiently it’s running. If you’re thinking about changing, you could save up to £300 on your heating bills and 1.2 tonnes of CO2 a year by replacing an old G-rated boiler with an A-rated condensing boiler.
10. Double-glaze all the way!
Energy-efficient glazing will reduce heat loss through windows, shrink your bills and even keep the noise out! By replacing all single-glazed windows with double-glazing you could save around £160 per year on your energy bills and 650kg of CO2.
Statistics taken from the Energy Saving Trust (statistics based on a typical three bedroom semi-detached gas heated house, with an average gas price of 4.49p/kWh and electricity price of 14.39p/kWh; correct as of September 2011 and valid for 2011-12)
