Candle Making for Beginners

By Wendy Racklave

The use of candles as decors has become a widespread fad. Now, not only are candles the plain-looking and odorless wax molds used for lighting. They have now become therapeutic adornments inside rooms and for setting the mood during fancy dinners.

With the great demand for fragrant and stylish candles, their prices have also gone up. Many people have resorted to making their own to cut the cost and to personalize the candles as well. Some have even turned their candle making hobbies into businesses. With this emerging trend, it is better not to be left behind. So here are easy steps on candle making.

To start of, you will need the following materials: candle wax, wicks, candle dye, fragrance oil, and molds. You may melt your wax in a double boiler but if you have none at home, an ordinary kettle will do.

After securing all the materials, you may now begin with the candle making. First, melt the wax in a container. Make sure that the stove you use is one that has temperature control. Wax cannot be subjected to extreme heat since it is capable of bursting. Candle wax is usually accompanied by instructions on how to melt it. Gel wax melts differently than the regular solid wax. You may also ask the store for further tips.

After carefully melting the wax, add the dye. Only a small amount is needed lest you want a very dark candle. Pour the wax on the container or molds. Use an aluminum cup or glass when transferring the melted wax. Make sure you do this with utmost caution since melted wax is very hot.

Add a few drops of fragrance oil to add scent to the candle. The wick must be secured in the middle and must reach the bottom. Use a clip to steady it in place. To make the wax harden fast, place them in a cool area.

One way to make the candles look more creative is through layering of different colors. To do this, prepare differently colored wax. Pour the first to the mold filling it halfway. Pour the second one directly on top of the other, careful in not mixing the together.

When the candles have hardened, use your creativity in decorating them. You may use ribbons, wires, dried colored leaves, or what have you. Just make sure they are pleasing to the eyes and they provide you with the relaxing mood they are intended to give.
