Planning Your Home Technology Needs

By Matt Epstein Email the author
Before you start your remodel or move into your new home you should consider all of your options on your current as well as your future electronic needs.
Today’s consumers are more electronically connected than ever before and advance planning can save you a lot of money, time and headaches.
Advance planning will make you a lot happier in your new home. It might seem expensive today, but it is money well spent and oftentimes needs to eventually be done, and it will cost you more if you hadn’t planned on it before moving in.
First:  Figure out what your current electronic needs are: These needs should include, telephone, music, TV, satellite or cable supplier, any special lighting needs, security systems, computer, Wi-Fi and anything else on your electronics list.
Second: Try to determine what your future needs might be. If you are planning to have kids….where will the baby monitors go? Talk to your contractor. If you’re installing a security system but not the cameras now due to the cost….plan now where the cameras would go when the time is right to install them…… so that you don’t find yourself having to tear down some walls. This pre planning now will help you to avoid problems later, and save you a lot of money.   All of this advance work regarding your technology needs can make your life easier and cost you less in the long run. See what you can afford to do now, then what you will wait on to do later. Just know that when the later comes you have a plan that has already been worked out.
Third: Figure out which rooms you will want each of these devices to work in.
Fourth: Look at the existing rooms and determine if you will need additional outlets or pre-wiring.
Fifth: Once you have determined your existing needs then create a written list, and review it to make sure that you have not overlooked anything.
Sixth: Create a list of different vendors or contractors that you will require to satisfy your needs. By giving these vendors your detailed written list, the contractors will understand that you are organized and hopefully they will be able to give you a more precise bid for your needs.
Seventh: After you have met with your vendors and reviewed your bids then talk to them and ask them if there is anything else that you are forgetting or missing.
These people are dealing with these different areas on a daily basis, and may have insight into some things that you haven’t even thought of yet.   You should now be ready to have your systems installed so that once you move into your new place you will be able to work more easily with all that is in place for you that will make your life easier.   Have fun getting yourself plugged into today and tomorrow’s technology. It’s a different world out there today, and the days of allowing that green flashing clock pulsating 12:00 over and over and over again on  your VCR are gone. Embrace today’s technology and plan ahead. Your life can truly be easier and just maybe you won’t  have any of those unsightly wires hanging out all over your place anymore.
