Tri-Cities Homeowners Renting Rooms for the Night

By Melanie Tubbs
KENNEWICK -- Taking the idea of couch surfing to a whole new level. Action News learned a new website could go a long way at helping visitors feel at home while also giving you a lot of extra cash.
Teresa Moose has been hosting people in her home for years and now through a new website, airbnb.com, she can make some money doing it.
Teresa explains, "I've had people from Pullman, from Seattle - all over the world that come and stay here."
Airbnb allows anyone to put their home or room up online and charge per night, like a hotel. KEPR went to see what we could find in Kennewick and found out that you could have a place to stay for as little as $15 with your own room, or an entire house for just $40.
Although you might not think of Kennewick as a vacation destination, Teresa was surprised to see how many people need a cheap place, even just for the night.
"It's on the way for everywhere, pretty much everywhere in the Northwest," she tells KEPR.
Even if you're trying to make a couple extra bucks, it's not for everyone.
"They contact you on their way through town and say, 'can I stay with you?' 'Sure.' You gotta be a little laid back," says Teresa.
But if you're not willing to give up your home, KEPR found out that you might be able to save $100 per night on your weekend getaway.
KEPR checked out Spokane and found houses for $50 per night, right down the street from a hotel would have cost $150.
Teresa thinks there are other perks to staying in a home, too. "If you're in a home environment, you're more relaxed."
Still skeptical, we asked her if she was nervous letting strangers stay in her home.
"They're your guest in your home and they're more appreciative, that's how I found it to be."
Turning your house into a hotel could help you get some extra cash and help a vacationer feel right at home.
It's free to sign up for airbnb - check it out here: www.airbnb.com
