Hollywood's 3D Scanning and Military Reverse Engineering

By Dayna Fields

Reverse engineering has done wonders for many industries- everything from food safety to the military. Likewise, 3D scanning has revolutionized the creative process for Hollywood and filmmakers all over the world.

One would agree with the amazing strides that have been taken, thanks to the help of these two amazing techniques and technologies.

A Hollywood filmmaker may want to scan in a plastered version of someone's face, which would lend the tools necessary to create a fictional character. A very high powered (and expensive) laser beam shoot over an object and converts all the data to the computer program, where the image will appear.

How the method works is with a very high powered (and expensive) laser beam, which shoots over an object as many times that the artist or engineer believes is necessary. For example, in Hollywood animation, an artist may want to scan in a plastered version of someone's face that he/she can stretch and sculpt into a fictional animated creation.

After the scan is completed, an immense amount of data is transferred to the computer. Incredible detail allows for incredible and organic realism, which every artist yearns for. Plus, the image offers 360 degrees of viewing. In the end, artists can stretch, sculpt, paint or mold whatever they want in order to create the creature of their desire with relative ease.

Reverse engineering is something that every science geek can relate to because it is really nothing more than taking things apart to see how they work and then trying to build your own. The trick is that you can't use any materials or methods from the original work.

During the Cold War, for example, the Soviets saw three American B-29 bombers that were forced to land in the USSR. Not having anything similar to the B-29, they confiscated an example, took it apart and within a few years they had an almost exact replica- with a Soviet spin on it, of course. They dubbed the weapon the Tu-4.

In conclusion, both processes and technologies produced incredible amounts of data and insights, as well as shockingly impressive and accurate results.

By Michael Bell

Whether you are taking a book, video, a real live human teacher, or online lessons, keep these pointers in mind in order to get the most out our your studies.

1. Complete and master each section before moving on to the next: As you work through your studies make sure you have each new technique or idea conquered before moving on to the next. Lessons are planned to build upon each other and trying to rush through without fully understanding one will just lead to frustration and wasted efforts.

2. Study as if you were back in school. Do your homework every evening. If all you have is 30 minutes then harness those 30 minutes. If you dont have time to study and apply then do the application of your last lesson or drills such as scales and chords. Reading/watching and not having the opportunity to apply immediately will usually mean you have to relearn your lesson. Take notes. Especially if youre watching a video or working with a human. Also dont be afraid to write all over your workbooks and sheet music.

3. Apply what youve learned: Play for others. Your church, your family, that spare piano sitting in your favorite department store (ask first). Nothing drives a music lesson home better than a recital. It will also magnify what you need to work on.

Top Tips For Taking Food Photos

By Jessie Wong

There are a number of different tips that could be learned when discussing the subject of food photography and what every food photographer should know. We will go cover a few of the introductory tips here. Some of the important ideas to keep in mind are lighting, props, quickness and enhancement. Here we will learn techniques for food photographers to take the next step.

Let there be light

Light is obviously the tool of a photographer second to the camera itself. Getting this right is always the trick with any kind of photography. With food photography though it is super important. Get it wrong and no amount of photoshop work will bring the picture to life.

Props

Food photographers setting up to take a picture not only arrange the food neatly but they also include a plate or table cloth to add the surrounding. The idea is not to clutter the picture but allow room for a few extra items you can add to it like a glass, napkin, or a fork. These items can be placed in the background in a secondary location of your picture area, giving it extra spice.

If you do a lot of food photography then shopping at second hand markets can be a great way to build your box of props. You can pick up expensive items like large pots and dishes and vases for a few dollars and a smile. If you do not do much then you may have to go shopping for what you need and bill the client!

Be Fast

Unfortunately food won't stay appealing for very long. As a food photographer you will want to be well prepared and ready to shoot your picture as soon as the dish is finished. This will give it no time to melt, collapse or lose its color. So knowing what you want the picture to turn out like will help you to prepare for the photo. One way food photographers prepare is to have everything arranged before the food is finished. By placing a temporary stand-in plate is an excellent way to get the lighting right, and when the food is finished you switch it with the finished dish and your picture is ready to be taken.

Way to improve your photographs in an instant

One simple way is to simply use a light high quality vegetable oil and brush it on the food! This will create a high quality shiny finish that we love to see on food.

Touch base with the chef

You will usually be working with a food professional be it a stylist or chef. Hopefully you are not on a low budget shoot and have to do the displays yourself.

Take a few minutes before the shoot to talk with the chef and ask them how they like to work. Ask them if there is anything you need to know about the food that may not be obvious. If nothing else this will make them feel good so you will then be able to work closer and better together.

PhotoEditorX Photo Editing Software Review

By Lucas Godfrey

I have finally gotten to that plateau of photo editing that I considered myself entering the realm of becoming a professional. What was not professional however was the digital photo editing software that I had now been using for months. It served great purpose in my learning stages but I have now come to the point where I have outgrown it.

My new challenge was to find an editing software program that would meet my needs yet present a challenge as well. Not in use mind you but in what I could do with it once, I learned what they had to teach. My first inclination of course was to search the web for what was available which there was no shortage of. Not being patient by nature I wanted to find a photo editing software that was immediately available for download. I knew enough not to go hunting for some free programs after all I was into some serious photography now.

On my journey I came across a software package called PhotoEditorX. It was not anything flashy in fact it was quite simple in that it got right to the point. It stated in clear no nonsense statements exact what it was and what it was meant to do. After a thorough review of what the product was, all about I reached some conclusions?

What I like about it was: The advertising and write up about the product was simple and easy to understand Which meant the program itself was likely going to be as well.

The images they showed were actual images that had been edited with PhotoEditorX, which were impressive.

The site was not loaded with testimony after testimony. The ones that were there were short and what appeared to be factual, as they referred to what the product could do based on their perspective.

You were not required to do a lot of reading to become convinced about this product. They showed a detailed video that backed up the claims they were making.

Probably one of the most important aspects were they were not afraid to define in very basic terms what they had to offer and used detail to do this.

There is no doubt that everyone reading and seeing what was being offered here would have a full understanding of what they would be getting.

What I didn?t like was? I had to go searching for the price but figured in the end it did not matter anyway. They said it was going to be inexpensive and I had believed everything else they said up to this point. I had already made the decision to purchase it.

The second thing had to keep my impatience in control. As I mentioned I went hunting originally for photo imaging software I could buy and download. Then I realized just how much more professional this method was. It was going to be worth the wait.

Overall, I figured I had spent some very productive time on my research and was pleased with the outcome.

Learning Guitar Notes

By Simon Mourrain

One of the first things to do when studying how to play the guitar is to know the notes. Learning guitar notes can be challenging, it takes time and dedication. On a guitar they are played on the fret board. You should not fear the fret board. Even if learning guitar notes can seem tough, you do not have to be discouraged, this is an essential step in studying how to perform the guitar

You have to understand the notes from the first string, then it will be easier to perform songs. On this string, there are three notes - E, F (first fret), and G (third fret). The second string is B, C (first fret), and D (third fret). You are now ready to practice. Slowly play these notes and make sure that you concentrate to learn them well.

A good way to learn is to exercise on easy melodies. You must be able to identify the notes as well as their names and sounds.

When you feel comfortable with the first 2 strings, you can concentrate on the third. G is the open string and the other note is A (second fret). When you understand these notes, start playing them together with the ones you've studied before. Again, you have to stick with easy melodies. You don't have to study on all the notes at once. Try to master each of them, one at the time. Even small kids can study guitar notes without problems. Follow these steps and in no time, you can perform them on your guitar.

Learning guitar notes will be very tricky if you don't posses your own guitar. Studying from books or music sheets is not enough. You should hear them being played on the guitar's fret board. A lot of learners fail to study for the reason that they don't have guitars on their hands. Once you study to read a music sheet, you can play more advanced melodies.

Using simple melodies, such as nursery rhymes that you learned as a child, will make the process of learning guitar notes easier and faster. Once you master and memorize them, you can perform the songs that you like.

If you know what you are doing, learning guitar notes will not be as hard. With all the resources provided online, ebooks, software, videos, you can study all these things by yourself. You do not have to hire an expensive professional teacher. However if you do not like studying alone and prefer having a teacher that is totally all right. But keep in mind that if you do not have a positive attitude, hiring a teacher will not make any difference.

The purpose in studying guitar notes is to identify them off the top of your head. Then you can focus on other aspects of the guitar studying process. Make sure that you stay motivated and that you have fun while learning.

10 Hot Tips for Shooting Great Digital Photos

By Lucas Godfrey

Often people will judge the camera by the picture it takes, failing to realize the camera operator plays a big part in this as well. Many novices feel that they just simply look and shoot. Any touch ups can be easily done with the photo editing software. While this is true, it still is not a great way to take photos. There are actually 10 simple basic steps that you can apply that will help you get a much better quality picture no matter what camera you are using.

Step #1. Do not be afraid to get close to your subject. All too often people stand back to take their shot instead of moving in. I think this is because they do not feel that they can get close up because it may blur the picture. If you cannot get close then use your zoom lens. Experiment with the macro mode as well. After a while, you will become comfortable with closer shots.

Step 2: Do not be afraid to use the white balance as well. All cameras come with a default setting and it is interesting to note that many people have not changed this since the camera came out of the box weeks ago. In fact try the cloudy position; you will be quite pleased with the overall look you get. What happens is it increases the red and yellow tones. These are classed as warm colors so it gives more warmth to your photos without distorting it.

Step #3: No one remains perfectly still when holding the camera. We all think we have a steady hand but there is always some slight movement. This is where the tripod comes in handy. It may seem like a nuisance to drag it with you everywhere you go, but once you compare the quality of your photos with and without the use of it you will want to keep using it.

Step #4: Your flash is an important part of your camera. Experiment with the fill flash or flash on mode when taking your outdoor portraits. Make the flash work when you want it to and not when the camera thinks it should. Do not be afraid to put your subject in shaded areas and use your flash to compensate for the lack of light.

Step #5: Let nature be your guide in the sense of using their horizontal likes such as the horizon or a section of land. This means you are holding the camera level.

Step #6 Try using some polarizing filters. This is ideal for outdoor shots and they reduce glare and reflections. The overall appearance of the colors is much more distinct.

Step #7. Many people will not use the self-timer feature simply because they do not know the best way to do so. Place the camera on a stable surface. Focus the sensor on an individual that is in the group picture and not on the background.

Step #8: Everyone would love to take a picture of a waterfall, but do not give themselves enough credit to be able to do so. First, use your tripod. Adjust the camera for greater field depth and slow the shutter down. The exposure should be at least one second longer. Then use the self-timer feature to take the shot.

Step #9: One of the biggest mistakes made by a novice photographer is not having a big enough media or memory card. It does not take long to fill a card and it is disappointing when you are halfway through your photography project and run out of memory.

Step #10 Use your camera to the max, in other words shoot at the maximum resolution. This is what gives you the quality of picture you need if you decide to have it enlarged.

Learning to be Musically Literate

By Victor King

There are not many online lessons on how to sight read music. Have you found any? The ones that are there usually try the subject logic approach. Do you know the difference between the subject logic approach and the developmental / sequential approach? It is as if no one even knows about how to teach developmentally or sequentially.

What we need is for someone not just to tell us how but instead, we need someone who is going to teach us how by doing it with us. We need someone who can break each step down into small achievable goals. If we could hear examples and sing with the example then we could learn.

Do you know how to sing the melody? What about a harmony part like alto, tenor or bass? Good vocal training is training that helps us to be able to read the music so we can sing a part other than the melody. Amazingly enough, in order for one to sing intervals accurately, one must hear harmonically, but this does not mean that we need to practice dry interval dictation. Interval learning can be fun!

Choral parts practice will go much faster when we the choir members can actually sight sing our parts without having to have it played for us on the piano. Maybe we could eliminate sectionals altogether. Do you think that would save time?

It may save some time if the choir director sang it for the choir since a voice is better support for the voice than a piano. Even so, if all could sight sing, even that would not be needed. In one sense, the piano is quicker but in reality, it is much slower than if everyone knew how to sing on sight.

If we are going to learn, then we have to set aside a time each day to discover something new about music and to review previous musical elements. What we need is someone that teaches in the lesson and not one that says, "Take it home and learn it." Each lesson should build on the preceding one.

As soon as it is time to learn a new musical component, we can return to previously learned songs or learn new songs. We all will learn to sing in a similar way that we learned to talk. Concisely, the entire process is to hear first, then sing, then comprehend, then read, then write and finally create!

I hope no one has ever told you that you cannot sing, because it just is not true. I hope the choir leader has never asked you to stop sing. How could they know more than God, who commands us to sing! It really is just a matter of learning to control our own spirit and voice.

Learning to sight sing is for everyone. Online sight singing lessons are possible and you can learn to sing over the internet. How significant is music to you? If you are a teacher who wants to teach music successfully - you can! If you are a student who wants to learn music to sight sing, be musically literate and sing beautifully - you can. Do not let anyone tell you different.

Lindsay Lohan and the Headlines

By Dylan Richkards

Lighting up screens at the age of 3, Lindsay should have been informed on the dangers of showbiz life. Ever since Lindsay moved to LA, she seems to be losing control.

As a New Yorker, Lindsay's first gig was at three years old as a Ford model. After which she appeared in over 60 TV commercials until 1996. It was then that Lindsay first appeared as an "actress" on Another World.

Lindsay starred in the Parent Trap in 1998 which was a remake of the old version. In 2003, she starred in another film that really skyrocketed her career and Lindsay made the decision to move to L.A.

Lindsay seems to rub people the wrong way, well when it comes to men anyways. Lindsay's four year feud with Hillary Duff is over Aaron Carter. Also the feud with Ashlee and Jessica Simpson over Wilmer Valderrama dates back to 2004.

In the early part of 2005, Lindsay lost a lot of weight. Later Lindsay admitted that she was bulimic. She appeared in Mean Girls. I'm not sure if the Lindsay took the character home with her. But after this movie, she was now portraying a "mean girls" attitude.

Lindsay was in two car crashes in 2005, which was apparently caused by the paparazzi. In 2006 Lindsay was told that she was being unprofessional for showing up to work late a couple of times. While back in New York, Lindsay broke her wrist while clubbing with friends.

Finally in December 2006 Lindsay began attending AA meetings after much criticism from the public. In 2007, Lindsay was arrested twice on drunk driving charges and sentenced to jail for 1 day, community service order and an 18 month alcohol education program.

There hasn't been much in the news lately about Lindsay, as she has been keeping busy with her new movie "Labor Pains." Her next progress hearing is set for January 2009. Hopefully Lindsay has learned a few lessons and learns some self confidence and discipline.
