Misunderstood SEO Concepts

Search engine optimization is not a straight forward approach and oftentimes requires experience and knowledge in order to get it right. Over the years some key important optimization techniques have been seriously misunderstood and completely butchered.

Here is a list of common misunderstood SEO concepts that I came up with:

Website Meta Info
You shouldn’t have 100 keywords stuffed into your keyword section of each page of your site. There should be no more than 5-7 keywords in this space strategic to the material on that web page.
Internal Linking
Your web pages should not have more links than content. This is going to cause a horrible user experience and could even cause a penalty if really abused.
Footer Links
Years ago it was a popular measure to stuff many different links into your footer with the hopes of misleading the search engines. If you did it years ago the algorithm might allow it but if you try it with a new website today you might have some troubles on your hands.
Directory Submissions
Directory submissions can generate nice link power when you are listed in strategic niche directories surrounding your area of business. Purchasing a directory submission package promising 1,000 links is not strategic and oftentimes abused.
Article Marketing
Article marketing is all about positioning yourself as an expert in your field by writing a few key pieces of literature. Paying someone overseas to re-write the same article 500 times is not going to help your business in any way.
One Way Linking
If you are a plumbing company and you are seeking out links on a florist directory you have the concept of one way link building all wrong. It is all about creating targeted one way links from either news or niche sources. Completely irrelevant links such as this could actually hurt your search engine optimization efforts.
Content Writing
Yes, content is important but that doesn’t mean that your local dentist practice in Sheboygan, WI needs 2,000 pages of content so that you can dominate the search results. This is an old school approach that really doesn’t work.
If you are going to conduct search engine optimization for your company business you need to be able to get it right. Things are always changing and it is important to roll with the punches so that you don’t find your website on the wrong side of the search engine space.

Google’s Farmer Algorithm: What’s in store for Ecommerce SEO - Convonix

Google tweaked nearly 500 changes in its algorithm to improve their search results and do away with content farms and spam websites. It is not new for Google to ring in changes to its algorithm, but this latest one seemed to tighten the reins on quality control rather stringently. It is commonly believed that search engine optimization (SEO) employs tactics to go around Google’s algorithm to get a good set of ranking for a website. Sometimes, the tactics turn grey when online merchants try to ape existing content or produce high number of contents that lack quality and clarity. Hence, firms like Convonix have to be thoroughly up to date with the antics of Google.
With an improved algorithm up and running, low-quality content pages are being pushed to the back while high quality content sites, such as those with original data, research analytics and meaningful insight, are being pushed to the top of the search results. Also, instead of finding multiple page results of basically the same link, Google will generate more relevant results devoid of link farms and worthless content.
This update has called for SEO marketers to look to three basic things:

1. Avoid reprocessed content: To copy and refurnish content may have been an easy trick of the trade, but now it calls for Search Engine Optimizers to look for fresh and quality-rich content.

2. Produce Unique Content:  It pays to be interactive and informative in a unique way that, consequently, generates higher traffic and ranks.

3. Focus on overall development of a business: By directing SEO focus on developing the overall business outlook, such as through good HTML construction, relevant anchor text and title heads, balanced content and ad ratio etc, will add to a better overall experience will the business. This results in higher return rates and popularity of the business.

Is Google Making You a Bad Cook?

Amanda Hesser has a thoughtful post on Food52 about Google’s new Recipe View function.
While Google has always favored content-rich sites, especially the ones that pay necromancers to practice the dark arts of search-engine optimization, its new recipe function also gives higher rankings to the sites that provide calorie counts, cooking times, user ratings and pictures, Ms. Hesser writes.
What this means is that Google’s search engine gives vast advantage to the largest recipe websites with the resources to input all this metadata, and particularly those who home in on “quick and easy” and low calorie dishes (which, by the way, doesn’t mean the recipes are actually healthy). In so doing, Google unwittingly — but damagingly — promotes a cooking culture focused on speed and diets.
She goes on to give examples of searches that give high rankings to ludicrous results such as a 77-calorie cassoulet and a six-minute fried chicken. The problem with Google, she argues, is that it is looking at the wrong data; if the point is to surface higher-quality results, why not prioritize things like the number of comments, Facebook likes and shares a recipes has earned? (Of course, Ms. Hesser is a founder of Food52, which features recipes, so she has a dog in this fight. So, for that matter, does The New York Times.)
Have you used Recipe View yet? Or Bing’s recipe function? Or Cookzillas?

What rising competition among search engines means for retail marketers

Bing’s strengthening position as the No. 2 search engine means that online retailers who felt safe by focusing their optimization and paid search efforts on market leader Google must think more broadly, says Eric Papczun, vice president of search engine optimization and feeds at online marketing agency Performics.
Papczun will speak at the Internet Retailer Conference & Exhibition 2011 in a session entitled “How Bing changes everything: What search engine marketers need to know.
In his session, Papczun will survey the search engine landscape and discuss how marketers must adjust their programs to account for recent changes, notably Bing taking over as the search engine for Yahoo sites.  Joining him will be a retailer who has made that transition, Jake Fenske, director of new media at Redbox.
“To drive success on top search engines, retailers should balance art and science and leverage data-driven decision marketing,” Papczun says.  “This means understanding the correlation between SEO
tactics and ranking as well as the market share, audience and demand related to various audiences.”
Those are the fundamentals that must drive strategy for retailers when integrating the management of paid and natural search, Papczun adds. In the session, he’ll address the algorithmic variables that drive results at both Bing and Google, the differences between the top engines, and how retailers can leverage their own data and data from other sources to best allocate search spending. The speakers will share how to determine what changes to make to search marketing programs and the results those changes deliver on Google and Bing.

Internet Retailer’s editors asked Papczun to speak because of his long experience in search engine marketing. Currently the lead on Performics’ optimization services group, he previously led several Performics account teams in strategy, project management and analysis of clients' performance marketing as vice president of client services. He was the architect of Performics' current SEO practice. Earlier in his career, he served as vice president and chief financial officer of Golf Links to the Past Inc., and was a management consultant and corporate trainer.

openPR) - Above and Beyond Office Cleaning, a company offering commercial janitorial and cleaning services in Garden City, New York, has joined forces with Prospect Genius, a leader in local Internet marketing, to help businesses in the greater Long Island area who need commercial office, carpet, and window cleaning help or janitorial services. Prospect Genius offers a program known as Search Engine Optimization (SEO), which helps local companies locate Above and Beyond Office Cleaning quickly and easily when they search online for commercial cleaning services in Garden City and in Long Island.

Michael Penoro, owner of Above and Beyond Office Cleaning, chose to hire Prospect Genius for SEO services in order to help company owners and leaders in Garden City and the region who need to find the business cleaning services that Above and Beyond Office Cleaning provides, from furniture and rug cleaning to window cleaning services. SEO increases the online presence of Above and Beyond Office Cleaning, which means that when local company owners search the Web for office cleaning services in Garden City or Long Island using search engines like Bing, Yahoo!, and Google, they find Above and Beyond Office Cleaning without difficulty. This makes good business sense for Above and Beyond Office Cleaning, since it means that local clients are finding them on the Web, but it's also good for the customers as well because they don't have to spend hours searching the Internet for the business cleaning service help they need.
As Penoro says, "It was important to us to find a better way to connect with the other local businesses in Garden City and Long Island who need the office and carpet cleaning services we provide." SEO provides Above and Beyond Office Cleaning with that opportunity.

Looking At Web Site Content Through Search Engine Eyes

The search engine Blekko, which brought slashtags into vogue, recently gave BrightEdge access to real-time link graph information. Integrating the feature into BrightEdge's search engine optimization platform gives companies the ability to verify that their back links are legitimate as well as whether sites ranking ahead of them are using black hat or unethical tactics to beat search engine rankings.
Blekko's index gets integrated into BrightEdge's SEO platform so clients gain Web data that can verify the quality of the links and those driving performance. This means companies through a dashboard can monitor how spam creators manipulate paid links using black hat strategies. It's an unusual partnership, but one necessary to monitor unscrupulous backend linking, according to BrightEdge CEO Jim Yu.
While Blekko began a mission, aside from Google, to clean up spam sites across the Web, platform companies like BrightEdge are more than willing to step in to become part of the change.
BrightEdge Connect, a technology layer in the SEO platform, enables open integration through standards-based APIs. But this is a "relationship, not just geared toward any specific feature," Yu says.
Ah, a "relationship." We've heard that word used before when talking about collaborating across companies, but entrepreneurs and engineers across the advertising space have been giving it new meaning lately. And with this announcement, we see those relationships in the long run could mean so much more.
Blekko has an open search index that when integrated into an SEO platform allows marketers to understand factors that appear on the page, social signals and other signs that go into ranking factors. Yu says it brings new insights into the type of content that can add value to people searching Web sites across the Internet.
Yu wants to give BrightEdge clients a view into their content through the eyes of search engines, but some experts and execs at engines like Google might disagree. Some say build content for site visitors, not engines.
He sees this as an opportunity to bring in additional data for companies using the BrightEdge platform such as an extended view into valuable content, as well as the ease with which search engines can crawl a Web site and index information. "You now have the ability to get a search engine's view," he says. "This allows you to make sure you're exposing the correct content to the search engines."
The ability to integrate search engine data into an SEO platform moves the search engine marketing medium to the next level, but we have already see it in retargeting of display ads from companies such as Magnetic, and I expect the industry will hear about many more similar deals this year. Search data will become the base for many types of marketing and advertising campaigns and platforms.
