The No-Hitter on LSD

Dock Ellis was not the biggest name in baseball history, but he was a piece of it in 1970 when he fired a no-hitter. This is easily one of the weirder stories in sports history, and if you haven't heard about it before, you're in for a treat.

At the time, no one thought of his no hitter as a big deal. Surely, any no hitter is quite the accomplishment, but this one seemed no different than most. This one was very different though. In 1984, Ellis revealed that he threw his no hitter while he was high on LSD.

Ellis thought he didn't pitch until later in the week, but after taking some LSD with his girlfriend around noon on that day, he picked up a local newspaper and noticed that it was his scheduled day to pitch. He rushed to the field as quickly as he could, all the while tripping off the powerful drug.

He would later say he remembers very little about the game. He focused solely on the catcher's glove, and was pretty wild the entire game. He had numerous walks and hit batters, but no one could actually hit him.

Teammates had to let him in on the past actions of the hurler. He had a few fielding chances, but jumped out of the way. Sometimes he said the ball looked very small, while other times it was big.

There's no doubt that LSD is a drug that should never be taken. Ellis's accomplishment is still extremely weird and intriguing though. No one would ever expect someone to pitch so well under the influence of such a powerful drug.

The feat will always be more infamous than famous, but this is one record that hopefully will never be broken. I'm not sure if anyone could if they tried.

The Man in the Iron Mask: Handsome retelling of the reliable Alexander Dumas story of a guy unreasonably imprisoned and encased in an iron mask-since his very existence challenges the reigning baron of France, the youthful, self-centered Louis XIV. The destiny of both are eventually in the hands of the aging although still enthusiastic Musketeers. It could be difficult to miss with that cast; the film is relatively enjoyable, however it does go on too long. Cast includes Leonardo DiCaprio, Jeremy Irons, John Malkovich, Gerard Depardieu, Peter Sarsgaard, and Hugh Laurie. (132 minutes, 1998)

A la Mode: This is a lighthearted French comedy of a young orphan who becomes apprentice to a village tailor, who proceeds to make it in the fashion scenc of the '60s. If the remainder of the film were as clever as the clothes there may be more than suggested. Cast includes Remy Duchemin, Ken Higelin, Jean Yanne, Francois Hautesserre, and Florence Challenge. (82 minutes, 1994)

Madagascar: A fun animated family comedy. When Marty the zebra decides he wants to see the world from outside the zoo, the penguins help him escape. Marty is gone, his friend also breaks out to find him and bring him home. Once out, they are captured by well meaning humans and shipped to Africa, to be returned to the wild. They miss Africa, and wind up on the magical island of Madagascar.

Scrooged: A humorous take on the famous Dickens novel, A Christmas Carol. Set in modern times, Frank Cross runs a TV station, and doesn't really appreciate the Christmas spirit. The three ghost of Christmas past, present and future join forces to set Frank straight.

The X-Files: FBI Agents Fox Mulder and Dana Scully hit the big screen in the first X-Files movie. Investigating the bombing of an office building in Dallas, the two agents are drawn into an even greater mystery. It eventually leads them to an alien plan to colonize the planet, and the U.S. government is somehow involved.

The Stepford Wives: An up to date remake of the 1975 film of the same name. The town of Stepford, on first look, seems like the perfect place. Everything in Stepford seems perfect. Newcomers to Stepford Joanne and Bobbie are starting to wonder what is going on. Will they figure it out before it is too late?

The Omen: This is a remake of the classic 1976 original. Born under suspicious circumstances, young Damian is a difficult child that his mother thinks he is evil. As things develop we soon realize that Damian is in fact the son of the devil. Now his father must go to Megiddo to learn how to stop the antichrist.

Buying A Camera And Understanding Zoom

At one time photography was a hobby limited to those with bottomless pockets and a keen understanding of the mathematics of light, focal distances and other confusing terms and phrases. Pioneers such as George Eastman (of Kodak fame) introduced many inventions that brought photography to the masses bringing down the costs and simplifying the processes. With the appearance of the instant camera we saw the removal of the need to wait for long periods of time before we saw the results of our snaps. Today the film camera has been replaced by the digital camera and it is no longer necessary to even print our photo's but have these advances made photography easier to understand?

As soon as you look to buying a digital camera you begin to realize how difficult it can be to make a decision. There are more companies producing cameras now than there has ever been. Well known manufacturers such as Canon and Nikon are still around but the infinite number of smaller companies appearing all the time just make the matter worse. These small firms often release fantastic bargains but it is often very difficult to understand if the digital camera deal before you is actually a bargain or not.

When buying a digital camera there are a few things to get to grips with. Most people are aware of the word megapixel but do you understand interpolation? These two words are incredibly important as two ten megapixel cameras are not equal if one interpolates the image. Interpolation is a digital way in which to increase the size of an image so a 5 mp camera can interpolate the image up to the equivalent of a 10mp one.

Zoom is another term which can be confusing but gaining an understanding of the two types, digital and optical, will help you find a digital camera bargain.

You will often see an impressive figure for digital zoom quoted on digital camera packaging but in actual fact you would be better off ignoring it. The reason for this is that digital zoom takes your photo and cuts it down in size (to the area you have zoomed into) and then simply enlarges this part. Of course the more you zoom in the more the photo degrades.

On the other hand, optical zoom, is something of importance. Optical zoom does not have an effect on the quality of your photo. Therefore you can zoom in and your image will still be as good quality as before. The greater the optical zoom the better the camera. However not all optical zoom is equal as the quality of the lens can vary between cameras.

The quality of the lens is one of the most important factors to consider when buying a digital cameral. Those tiny cameras for a $100 are not going to produce photo's of the same quality of those taken with a camera where the lens alone can cost several thousand dollars. Generally the higher the price of the lens the better the quality of the resulting image.

What will you be using your camera for? This is important because if most of your photos will be of friends and general snaps you will not need to spend a small fortune on a DSLR camera with a large mm lens with a large optical zoom. In such cases a compact digital camera would be the best buy.

The world of the DSLR camera is huge, far too complicated to cover here in one article. Many people are buying them for home use now but they are usually only used by professional photographers.

Personally I use a professional Canon DSLR and a superb Canon PowerShot A480 for quick snaps. I think the A480 is fantastic for the price and suitable for all manner of photography. It only has a 3.3x optical zoom but this is ok for most situations. When comparing cameras look at the specifications carefully and always read reviews before making your final decision.
