What Is Google’s +1? Maybe Facebook Knows

Social networking is taking over a large part of every persons life these days.  Since Facebook was opened to the public, every other large internet company has been trying to get their hands on what Facebook has; millions and millions of members.  We have read many times that Google was in the social network arena and with Google’s latest experiment you can be sure they are taking baby steps in the right direction.

Google announced a new feature, called +1, which is similar to Facebook’s “Like” system.  If you are part of the experiment, you will start to see “+1″ popping up with your search results and clicking this will setup a tab on your Google profile that accumulates all your +1′s for family and friends to view.  In short, it’s a recommendation engine for Google search results.  Right now the feature is on Google Search only, but I am sure the plans are much bigger than that.

Once your “plus ones” are put on your tab, if friends or family would search and happen to see the same results you did, your +1 recommendation will show up on the results page for them to see.  The recommendation on the internet are a huge part of finding exactly what you are looking for online.  Many people write reviews, email links and get those looking for something, much closer to finding it.  This feature for Google Search could open up a whole new world, not to mention, could kill Search Engine Optimization at the same time.

Google will succeed with this new feature, there is no doubt in my mind.  Of course it’s a copy cat of the Facebook Like button, but better.  You can read more about it on ComputerWorld.com.
What do you think about the new feature?
