Montville and Madison were listed by Money magazine as being among the Best Places to Live in 2011.
Montville, which was cited for the number of Fortune 500 companies with a presence within its boundaries and its proximity to beaches and mountains, came in at number 17.
“Montville was a smaller town 20 years. We’ve grown but we tried to maintain that small community feel,’’ said Mayor James Sandham Jr. “We have three different sections, Montville, Pine Brook and Towaco, but we all come together as Montville.”
Madison, which was cited for its direct train service to Manhattan and its popularity among artists and academics, was listed as number 33.
“Money is confirming what we residents already know. This is one of the best places to live, raise a family and do business,” said Madison Mary-Anna Holden. “While I’m thrilled, we were bested by Montville, who ranked 17th and South Brunswick coming in at 22nd. Their statistics were relatively the same, although Montville and South Brunswick showed a 3.2 percent and 8.29 percent jobs increase, respectively, versus Madison that posted a 6.9 percent for the same time period of 2000-2010.’’
Money describes the 100 towns it selected as small towns that “stand out in the qualities American families care about most - great job opportunities, top-notch schools, safe streets, economic strength, nice weather, plenty to do and more.”
Money describes Madison as an affluent town with a rich history, saying it had one of the nation’s first commercial railroad lines, and that it lured prosperous families from New York City who were looking for room to spread out, ride horses, and garden.
“Residents enjoy a relaxing, historic ambiance, a direct line to Manhattan, and a variety of housing options, from affordable apartments to million-dollar-plus homes,’’ Money says in the rankings. The borough, which has a population of 15,845, has a median income of $131,529, and a median home price of $570,840.
More than 50 Fortune 500 companies have headquarters, major facilities, or offices in and around Montville, including AT&T, Pfizer, Honeywell, and Bayer Healthcare Pharmaceuticals, Money said in its blurb about the township, which has a population of 21,528, a median income of $139,673, a median home price of $265,929 and 6,221 restaurants within 15 miles.
Sandham, who noted that his town has twice before been listed among the top 100, said the number on the list is not as important as just being recognized by making the list.
“Whether you’re 12 or 18 or 23, is less important than making the list,’’ Sandham said. “We have a great community with a lot of volunteers that put a lot of effort into making our community a great place to live.’
