A woman who confessed that £80,000 worth of cannabis was growing in her Leeds home when it was raided by police, has avoided a prison sentence.
Samantha Kelly, 41, was instead handed a suspended sentence after Leeds Crown Court was told she was “not the most sophisticated lady.”
Officers found 82 cannabis plants growing in her home on Vesper Road, on the Hawksworth estate, close to Kirkstall, Leeds, on November 30 last year.
Duncan Ritchie, prosecuting, told the hearing that the home’s electricity supply had been bypassed and its rooms had high powered lighting. An extraction unit was also fitted to the chimney.
When Kelly was arrested she told officers who questioned her that she had nothing to with the cultivation of the plants – even though they were on her property.
Mr Ritchie told the court that the prosecution accepted her account as fingerprints of two other people were found on the equipment being used.
Kelly yesterday pleaded guilty to permitting her home to be used for the production of cannabis as well as the abstraction of electricity.
The court heard she has no previous similar offences.
Judge Christopher Batty told the court: “She is not the most sophisticated lady is she?”
He handed her a 39-week prison sentence, suspended for 12 months proving she does not reoffend.
He also made her the subject of a supervision order.
Judge Batty told her: “I am satisfied this wasn’t your enterprise.
“It strikes me that you are quite vulnerable and certainly vulnerable to others.
“You ... were seen as an obvious opportunity for them to make a lot of money and for you to get rid of the debt you had to them.”
