Home Tour offers unique decor
Four Santa Clarita Valley homes are set to star in the Henry Mayo Newhall Memorial Hospital’s 31st annual Holiday Home Tour on Saturday.
A holiday tradition in Santa Clarita, funds raised from the event benefit the hospital’s new Neonatal Intensive Care Unit.
Hosted by the all-volunteer Home Tour League, the event is preceded by a black-tie optional preview gala on Friday evening. The preview gala includes both the tour of homes and dinner at the Tournament Players’ Club.
“I’m hoping we raise lots of money for the NICU,” said Barbara Sanguinetti, Home Tour president. “It’s a vitally needed service in our community.”
The $25 ticket for Saturday’s tour offers guests the opportunity to explore each home that is festively and professionally decorated with its own holiday theme.
“As a designer, I have to say that all the homes will be really unique this year,” said Jo Ann Vindigni, Home Tour chairwoman.
From angels to crowns, the striking Westridge home of Martin Avila and Fredye Gonzales features rich shades of burgundy, gold and silver.
Decorated by Gonzales with the couple’s personal collection of holiday heirlooms, more than six ornate trees will be on display, many standing atop a table for maximum impact.
“You don’t have to have a 12-foot tree,” Gonzales said. “This way, they still fill up the whole room. I hope people can come in here and get new ideas for their own holiday decorations.”
It’s the second time Avila and Gonzales have participated in the home tour over the last decade.
“We love to give back,” Gonzales said.
At the Stevenson Ranch home of John and Judy Hall, the holidays have a distinctly East Coast vibe.
“I’m originally from Massachusetts and Judy’s from New York,” John Hall said. “Whenever we travel back east, we get collectibles and antiques. They’re displayed throughout the house.”
In addition to a large collection of 1920s and ’30s kitchen utensils and collectibles from John Hall’s native town of Petersham, the beautiful Colonial-style residence features real plank hardwood floors and traditional wainscoting throughout.
“Our intention was to make it very warm and friendly,” John Hall said. “We love being able to participate in the tour. We think it’s wonderful what the foundation does.”
Walking into the Newhall residence of Marvin and Gail Smith is like taking a trip to a French chateau. Awash in shades of silver, gold and white, an extensive collection of European antiques are on display throughout the many rooms of the house, including plaster pieces from a mansion in France and Italian doors from a church, as well as opulent candlesticks and mirrors.
The Smith home also promises to transport guests to more exotic corners of the globe, with furnishings and rugs hailing from as far as Africa and Asia in the upstairs bedrooms and “man cave.”
American antiques are the main attractions at the lovely ranch-style home of Roger and Becki Basham. A player piano cranks out festive tunes in the living room, while green Depression-era glass decorates the dining room table.
In the children’s bedroom, real Raggedy Ann and Andy dolls take a nap on the bed, while a Southwest den reflects Becki Basham’s New Mexican heritage.
“I collect everything,” said Becki Basham, who’s also a Home Tour volunteer. “Almost everything in here is the better part of 100 years old.”
The Basham home was originally featured on the tour in 2000 and the couple was happy to once again offer its residence this year.
“I just think it’s really important to have the best hospital we can have,” Becki Basham said.
In addition, the Holiday Home Tour also includes a holiday boutique at Hart Hall (adjacent to William S. Hart Park in Newhall) at 24151 Newhall Ave., Newhall. The boutique is free and open to everyone on Saturday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.
