Acoustic Guitar: For Every Player In Any Style

By Fafane Caloxty

Acoustic guitars can produce a variety of sounds, both classic and modern. Unlike the electric guitar, this type of guitar does not require electric amplification of sound. Sound is projected entirely through acoustic methods, which makes the sounds produced by the strings able to be heard.

Acoustic guitars are constructed with a sound box and soundboard, which is used to increase the sound made by strumming the guitar's strings. The interior of this type of guitar is hollow so that the vibrations caused by the strings are amplified. The soundboard on a guitar of this type is larger than those found on an electric guitar so that they can displace more air. This causes a louder sound to be produced.

This type of guitar does not require an amp, while an electric guitar does. An acoustic guitar does not need any additional amplification from an outside source. Because of this feature, the sounds made by the guitar are different. More energy is expended through the use of the natural process of acoustic sound projection, which changes the sounds created by this type of guitar.

This changes the sound because this natural process requires more energy. Since more energy is consumed by amplifying sound, the strings vibrate for a shorter period of time.

Acoustic guitars come in a wide variety, as design and construction directly affect the sounds produced by the guitar. The largest differential is the material of the strings. This type of guitar can have nylon/gut strings or steel strings. From string material, there are many subset types of guitars. For example, a Classic Guitar is a modern version of the original guitar design and is constructed with nylon strings.

The Romantic Guitar and Flamenco Guitar are also nylon stringed. Within the category of steel strings, there is the Steel Stringed Acoustic Guitar, which is more commonly known as a "Folk" or "Country" guitar. Also in this category are the Twelve String Guitar and the Battente Guitar.

There is another special type of acoustic guitar, known as a Lap Steel Guitar. It is labeled separately, rather than as a type of steel string guitar, because of its unique construction. This type is steel stringed, as the name suggests, but it is held in the lap and the strings are raised is a unique fashion seen only in this type of guitar. Lap Steel Guitars cannot be played in the conventional fashion. They require the used of a metal slide known as a "Steel", and are the forefather of today's conventional guitars.

If you are looking for choice, the acoustic guitar is the way to go. The electric guitar does not offer nearly as many options. This is the type of guitar used for more soulful music or self composing.
