After taking part in wild celebrations into the early hours of the morning, people woke up

 today to the dawn of a new century. In spite of concerns over the present course of events in the South African War and the actions of Boxer rebels in china, the general feeling is one of optimism since the state of world affairs is far rosier today than it was at the beginning of the 19th century. During the last 100 years there have been remarkable developments in communications and industry. Today there is every hope that, along with further progress in these and other important fields, the years that follow will bring peace and prosperity across the world.
