10 JULY Paris today celebrates the opening of the Chemin-de- Fer Me'tropolitain de Paris, the underground railway "Le Me'tro". Construction of the 10-km ( 6.25-mile) long railway began in 1898. Many of the stations are designed by the architect Hector Guimard, whose ornate wrought-iron designs are winning praise across the city.
