A new comScore report indicates search engines are growing increasingly integral to how many Americans navigate the web, illustrating the value of B2B search engine optimization campaigns.
During the month of March, more than 18.8 billion queries were performed by Americans. With the exception of February, which was down because of the fewer number of days, the number of searches conducted has risen every month for the past year. This means that, despite the growth of social media, search engines are still vital research tools for most Americans.
As always, Google remained the top search engine, accounting for 64 percent, or 12.1 billion, of the queries made. However, Yahoo and Bing continued to slowly chip away at Google's market share in March, growing 0.9 percent over the course of the month. Together, they make up 26.4 percent of the total query volume - more than 5 billion searches combined.
Moreover, separate reports from Efficient Frontier suggest that Bing and Yahoo have a higher return on investment than Google, which makes the two platforms particularly lucrative for B2B organizations looking to leverage paid search campaigns.
