Many poker-playing moms may have realized by now, just like the home they make for their children, they can also make a poker site their home. Making yourself a poker home isn’t exactly what it sounds like - I do not by any means mean that you attempt to build some poker software to your liking and get busy inviting guests to come and play on it. I also do not mean that you should go out there and make your own poker forum, or poker hideaway. By building a poker home I mean making an online poker site you feel comfortable playing at - one of the only places you play poker.
With all of the changes that occurred due to online poker’s Black Friday, many of our poker mommy’s are left with no place to call their poker home.
Our poker moms are shifting themselves to new and untested territory. Many of the American moms I know played on Full Tilt and PokerStars, almost exclusively, and now are left scratching their heads as what they should do. They are starting to make new sites their homes. I have some important things for my friends to consider before they jump on to any site attempting to make themselves some money – or rather, before they risk losing it!
As we know, no poker software is the same. Sure you have large poker networks where all the rooms have the same functionality, as in; the buttons are in the same place, the table seats the same number of players, and the deposits and withdrawals are done by the same methods. This is the factor I am talking about. You need to know where everything is in your poker home in the exact same manner as you do in your family home. It is a big mistake to jump into new unknown territory without the slightest clue of what you are doing. Without feeling comfortable in a new poker home, it can cost you money.
Simple things in online poker sites such as re-buying, adding on, and knowing how to find and choose the right games, is something you should know like your own kitchen! It doesn’t take a rocket scientist to determine that if you cannot find the buttons to easily re-buy and add on in an R & A tourney, you are in some serious trouble! I had this issue myself once. I went into panic calling on a friend that was familiar with the site to send me in the right direction. Luckily she was there otherwise I would have missed my add on and been at less of an advantage.Game selection on new sites is also an important factor to consider. The bigger sites have a massive listing of tournaments, both single and multi-table sit and go’s, multitable tournaments, satellites, rebuys, freezeouts, guarantees, and major events, all in a variety of game formats. On sites that you are not familiar with, you can be missing out on value for money by not knowing where to go to find the games that suit best. Let’s take a look at satellites as an example. You wish to win your way to the World Series of Poker (WSOP) and yet you are searching high and low in the tournaments section, only to find out after registering for a more expensive satellite that they have them in tabs called “other” and “live events.” You have just spent more of your valuable bankroll dollars then you may have wanted to.
Before you jump in a game on an online poker site, be sure you know what you are getting into. It is an unfortunate thing, but we all know there have been scammers in online poker. Smaller sites that come and go and take your money just as quickly. Be sure to do at least some basic research before depositing on a new site. Get some feedback through trusted friends and forums to see if the site you are about to play on has had any issues. You can also put the site name into search engines and do a little research on your own. Also check their withdrawal requirements. There is no point depositing on a site to find you can’t cash out after a big win. This is an avoidable and frustrating situation. Of course we know sites have had issues paying the American players their funds, but this is not what I am referring to. I am talking about slow payouts and inability to cash out players for other reasons. Look for warning signs and if you find any, just avoid the site - may the buyer beware!
In addition, be sure to do your house cleaning before you rack up at the electronic felt. We all know how to sort out our kitchen cupboards and setting our lobby up is no different. Be sure to have them sorted the way you need them to be with filters set for your game preferences, also think about your chat, auto-posting of blinds in ring games, or mucking of your hands, and your preferred seating position. Doing this before you jump into games will ensure you can focus on playing your A game instead of looking around for functionality of the poker site.
And my best advice once you do feel comfortable with the right site selection? Cook up a poker storm and make some delicious money in your wonderful new poker home!
