Thieves targeted the home of a four-year-old boy who suffers from cancer just days before a dream family holiday. They took his spending money and birthday presents.
But the family was still due to travel to Paris for the trip to Euro Disney.
It has been paid for by children’s charity, The Make-a-Wish Foundation, and tickets for the trip were not taken. The boy suffers from Rhabdomyosarcoma, a rare muscle cancer.
Electrical items worth more than £20,000 were also taken during the Bury break-in.
Police are investigating whether the house was deliberately targeted because the boy and his family featured in a recent television documentary. They condemned the ‘heartless’ burglars.
Supt Mark Granby said: "What this family has been through is absolutely heartbreaking.
"This was to be the little boy’s dream holiday. While they are still able to go away their spending money has been taken away by some cruel and heartless thieves. The family’s circumstances have featured on a television documentary so we are investigating the possibility they have been deliberately targeted, which would make this an even more callous and cowardly act by the culprits who must have known the pain and upset their actions would cause."
The intruders broke in through an upstairs window. Jewellery, a bike, a TV, computer consoles and games were taken.
The raiders also stole the family’s Ford Fiesta car, which was found burnt out nearby.
