Here’s a project that will warm your heart as well as your toes.
Kids from Arrowhead Primary School in Copley Township have created two lap blankets that are being raffled to raise money for the Copley Police Department’s Share-a-Christmas program, which provides gifts for families in need. The second- through fourth-graders knitted 7-by-9-inch rectangles last school year during an after-school knitting program, and the rectangles were then pieced together into blankets by their knitting instructor, Allison Chrien.
Chrien, who runs Yellowbird Yarn Room in Copley’s River City Gift Shoppe, has been leading her students in making a blanket for the fundraiser each year for the last few years. Last year she expanded her knitting program to a second school, Herberich Primary in Bath Township, and between the two sites, she had so many knitters and squares that she was able to produce four lap blankets instead of the usual one full-size blanket.
The two created by the Arrowhead knitters are on display at River City Gift Shoppe, 1265 S. Cleveland-Massillon Road, and will be given away in a drawing Monday. Raffle tickets can be purchased there for $1 each or six for $5.
The Herberich pupils donated their two blankets to Summit County Children Services for its visitation rooms, so they can comfort many children over the years, Chrien wrote in her blog at http://yellowbird.typepad.com.
If they wish, winners of the Arrowhead blankets can donate them to Children Services, too, she said.
Horticulture grants
Grants for up to $1,000 are available for horticulture-related projects, programs or events through the Partner Grant Program of the Master Gardeners of Summit County.
The grants are available to nonprofit organizations in Summit County. Programs must have an educational element to qualify, and grants must be used within 12 months.
Application deadline is Feb. 25. For information, contact Vince Matlock at 330-896-3661 or vfmatlock@att.net.
Coffee filter uses
I’m wary of home tips that circulate around the Internet, because often the advice is suspect. But an email I received on uses for disposable coffee filters caught my eye.
A few of my favorites:
• Cover dishes you’re heating in the microwave.
• Place between pieces of china to cushion and protect them in storage.
• Place in a cast-iron skillet to absorb moisture and prevent rust.
• Line a plant pot to let water flow out the drainage hole but keep soil in.
• Wrap Christmas ornaments in them for storage.
