Think out of the box for home decor

Gunjan Khaitan Shahabadi, partner at The Orange Bicycle, gives home lovers 10 quick tips to give their space a makeover…
Remember that an item, be it a lamp, painting or even a rug, should make a style statement instead of cluttering your home with too many things. Pick something that piques the curiosity of your guests and becomes a conversation starter.
Your home is your lifestyle index and accentuates your personality. So listen to your heart and head when you’re going shopping for home and don’t buy whatever is the flavour of the month just because people are buying it.
Try and experiment with different kinds of lights at home. Lamps made of canvas, cloth prints with quirky art on it, always catch attention. They’re easy to set up and maintain but you just have to make sure it goes with whatever else is there in your home.
If you need to make a small space look good, focus on the ceiling than on the floor. Put up sun catchers, torans, ceiling lamps. As for the walls, a nice art print will look good. For the floor, use a dhurrie, maybe one floor lamp and some floor cushion if you have the benefit of a dust-free home.
Interesting ideas will make people love your home. For instance, a fridge full of magnets can turn a boring piece of equipment into something cool. Plus, your friends will always talk about it!
Those who love ethnic homes but don’t live in a sprawling space can move away from the typical brass figurines and such decorations and go for a look where modern meets the traditional. There are weavers and craftsmen who are working towards marrying the traditional cultures of India with the contemporary. They use the same colour tones but the treatment is quirky, which makes the item fun and interesting.
For modern homes, don’t go overboard with colour. Too much of pink, orange and blue will create a jarring effect for anyone who walks in. Make sure the colour combinations of the wall and your décor are soothing to the eye.
If you love a cozy corner to chill with friends or to just catch up with your reading, I’d recommend you to keep the space as open as possible. Use less furniture, throw in more of soft furnishing and use something as different as pop art on your wall to add the fun element.
Research is must. Don’t buy things for your home that you are not aware of, as far as its story is concerned. So if you’re buying cushion covers with Bob Marley’s photo on it, you should know who the man is!
Before heading out to shop, make sure you do a quick check of what you already have. You don’t want to spend a lot of money on buying something that won’t go with what you’ve already put up in your home.
