Brands generate awareness via "new SEO"

Many firms and businesses have begun to integrate relevant content into their websites, either by posting up-to-date news articles or creating industry blogs, as a way of engaging consumers and connecting with their target audience.

However, according to Mashable, this also provides companies with another benefit. The source reported that updated content, as well as tweeting and other posts on a social media website, build links and can generate brand awareness. The site refers to it as the new search engine optimization.

"A year from now, all the effective [business-to-business] marketers will be adding content creation and distribution to maximize the impact of traditional marketing tactics and open a dialogue with prospects," said Dru DeSantis, co-founder and partner of DeSantis Breindel, in a statement, describing content marketing as a "lifeline" for marketers to connect with one another, as well as with consumers and potential clients.

"For smart business marketers who get into the game now, there is definitely an opportunity to win intellectual shelf space and a place in the consideration set of the right decision makers," he added.

The Content Marketing Institute noted that 93 percent of companies are using content marketing in their business advertising strategies, and are creating or plan on creating content as a part of their tactics in 2011. Additionally, 44 percent of marketers said they expect to to slash their ad budgets to make way for social media and custom content efforts.
